Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what Pacific Ocean region is Easter Island located?

Answer: Polynesia

Easter Island is the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. A special territory of Chile, Easter Island is known for statues called moai. There are 887 statues; the tallest is 37 feet (10 metres) and weighs 82 tons.
2. Near which man-made lake is Abu Simbel located?

Answer: Nasser

In the 13th century b.c., Ramses II had Abu Simbel carved from the mountainside to commemorate the Egyptian victory (the Hittites also claimed they won!) at the Battle of Kadesh. In 1968 the monument was moved to higher ground due to the building of the Aswan High Dam, to avoid its submergence under the reservoir, Lake Nasser.

The four colossal statues are over 65 feet (20 metres) tall.
3. During Roman times the city of Baalbeck was known as Heliopolis and contained one of the largest sanctuaries in the empire. In what modern country is Baalbeck located?

Answer: Lebanon

Septimius Severus made Heliopolis a Roman colony in 193 AD. Work then began on a religious complex to honor Jupiter, Bacchus, and Venus. The right of "ius Italicum" was given to the city, meaning (among other things) that it was governed by Roman law and all people born in the city were Roman citizens.

The six Corinthian columns are all that remain of the original 54 columns that were 62.34 feet (19 metres) tall.
4. Which of the following towns in England would be closest if a tourist wanted to visit Stonehenge and stay nearby?

Answer: Amesbury

Amesbury, a civil parish in Wiltshire, England, is located two miles from Stonehenge; Salisbury is located eight miles away. Built on the Salisbury Plain approximately five thousand years ago, the tallest upright stone is 22 feet (6.7 metres) high, with another 8 feet (2.4 metres) below ground.
5. The Great Wall of China stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east of China to which location in the west?

Answer: Lop Lake

An archaeological survey of the Great Wall indicates that it measured approximately 5500 miles (8850 km), and was made up of actual wall, trenches, and natural barriers. The wall was as much as 25 feet (7.5 metres) tall in some places and ranged in thickness from fifteen to thirty feet. Lop Lake is a dried up salt lake that has been used in the past as a nuclear testing site. Today, with the discovery of potash deposits, it is an important mining region of China.
6. One of the largest pre-Columbian Maya sites, Tikal is located in the Petén Basin of which modern-day country?

Answer: Guatemala

One of the major sites of Maya civilization, Tikal was inhabited from approximately the sixth century BC, to the tenth century AD. When the city was abandoned, the remains were overrun by jungle growth, and although it was rediscovered in the 1840s, it is still not completely excavated. Tikal Temple, shown in the picture, is 154 feet (47 metres) tall.
7. It's a long walk up to Edinburgh Castle! What name is given to the succession of streets one must travel to watch the One O'clock Gun - every day but Sunday?

Answer: Royal Mile

The succession of streets that form the Royal Mile form the main street of Old Town in Edinburgh that is approximately one Scot's mile (1.81 km) long. The street begins at Holyrood Palace which served as the residence of Scottish kings beginning in the sixteenth century. Castle Rock, upon which sits Edinburgh Castle, the city's fortress, is at the end.

It rises from the surrounding landscape at about 216 feet (80 metres) high.
8. There are many pyramids in Egypt, but at which location in Egypt would one find the Bent Pyramid?

Answer: Dashur

The ancient Egyptians began their pyramid building with the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and transitioned eventually to smooth-sided pyramids like the Great Pyramid at Gizeh. The Bent Pyramid at Dashur is an example of one of the transitional styles. Measuring 332 feet (101.1 metres) high, the Bent Pyramid is unique because it still retains much of its original limestone casing.
9. Every ancient polis in Greece had a citadel called an acropolis. There were three basic requirements that the site chosen for the acropolis had to meet. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: It had to have arable land.

Since the acropolis was the stronghold of the city, it had to offer protection in case of an attack as well as provisions in case of a long siege. In the early days of the acropolis at Athens, kings and nobles actually lived on top of the 512 foot (156 metre) high plateau, however, the common people were allowed to seek refuge if there was an attack. Temples and monuments to the gods and goddesses were eventually built there; the focal point, of course, was the Parthenon, which was built to honor the city's patron goddess Athena.

While the men fought, the other residents of the city would pray to the gods for divine intervention.
10. Mesa Verde is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States. In what state is it located?

Answer: Colorado

There are over four thousand archaeological sites located at Mesa Verde National Park. Inhabited by the Anasazi, or Ancient Ones, from 600-1300, is best known for cliff dwellings like the one in the picture. Called the Cliff Palace, it is believed to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America and contains the Square Tower House.

The tallest structure at Mesa Verde, the tower house is 26 feet (7.9 metres) high.
