According to legend, Apollo was fighting with Python. When Apollo defeated Python, the serpent fell into a gap in the earth. Its body emitted vapours, which were inhaled by Pythia who was near the scene. She lost consciousness, and Apollo proceeded to enter her body.

She later gained amazing vision and foretelling abilities. People would come from all over to seek her wise counsel. It would certainly be a good place and time to pray to the god Apollo if you were there!

Interestingly, the ruins of Sarmizegetusa later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
