Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tioman Island is thirty-nine kilometers in length and twelve kilometers in width. The rainforest known as Pulau Tioman jungle covers a span of just over eight thousand hectares. To which country does this beautiful island belong?

Answer: Malaysia

Situated in the State of Pahang off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is the very gorgeous island of Tioman. There are few people who populate the island which is a very popular spot for any avid scuba diver. The island is surrounded by coral reefs. The actual jungle, Pulau Tioman jungle, has a variety of animals that are protected. Some of the animals include the common palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), binturong (Arctictis binturong), long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) and the red giant flying squirrel (Petaurista petaurista). The slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) and the brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) are also protected mammals in the jungle. There are more than 130 species of birds in the rainforest including the frigatebird (family Fregatidae).

The image shown with this question is a binturong.
2. Our next jungle is also known as Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves and has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. What is the more common name of this jungle which is also on the Australian Heritage List?

Answer: Gondwana rainforest

The Gondwana rainforest, also called the Gondwana jungle is one of the world's largest jungles with fifty separate reserves within it. The sheer size of this jungle is an amazing 3,665 square kilometers. New South Wales and Queensland can boast possession of much of this heritage site, but the largest part of the jungle is situated in Tarkine Wilderness, Tasmania. More than 200 endangered, threatened and rare animals as well as plants make the Gondwana rainforest their home. There are many National Parks within the rainforest. A couple of them are Lamington National Park in Queensland and Nightcap National Park in New South Wales.

The Australian aboriginal word coolamon is a type of dish, woomera is a kind of spear-throwing device and billabong is an isolated pond.

The image used for this question is a blue-faced honeyeater (Entomyzon cyanotisbird) at Gondwana South Bank Parklands.
3. India and Bangladesh share a beautiful jungle which is also considered as mangrove. The name means beautiful forest when translated into English. Can you pick out the name of this jungle?

Answer: Sundarabans

The Sundarabans cover a total area of just over 4,000 square kilometers with 1,700 square kilometers being made up of rivers, canals and creeks. This halophytic mangrove can grow plants in the highly salty water that covers so much of the area. Sixty-six percent of the Sundarbans lies in Bangladesh and thirty-four percent lies in West Bengal, India. This beautiful jungle is home to the spotted deer along with many more rare birds, mammals and reptiles. The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) inhabits this large reserve. Sundarbans is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site.

A mangrove swamp is depicted in the photo used in this question.
4. The Papua New Guinea jungle is world known as an intact jungle. There are many villages throughout the jungle where male members honor the crocodile and consider it to be holy. What do the men do to honor the crocodile?

Answer: Have ritual scars put on their backs

Surprisingly as it may seem, male members have ritual scars on their backs which they honor the holy crocodiles with. The jungle has mountain ranges running throughout the island as well at wetlands that surround both the Sepik River and the Fly River. More than seventy-five percent of the country is covered with thick dense jungle. Most of the villages on the island have their own language with over eight hundred languages being spoken. The jungle consists of many plants like orchids, wild taros and rhododendrons. Papua New Guinea has had reports of headhunting as recently as the 1960s and 1970s.

The picture used in this question is a crocodile and the scientific name for the New Guinea crocodile is (Crocodylus novaeguineae).
5. The next jungle we'll visit quite literally means "kingdom of the lion". It is located in Sri Lanka but do you know the actual name of the jungle?

Answer: Sinharaja jungle

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve means kingdom of the lion and is a true hotspot of biodiversity in the country of Sri Lanka. This jungle was declared as a Biosphere Reserve in 1978. In 1988 it was listed as a World Heritage Site. Though small in size, twenty-one kilometers long by seven kilometers wide, it is home to the purple-faced langur (Trachypithecus vetulus), and barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak). Some of the amazing and rare birds found here include the Sri Lanka blue magpie (Urocissa ornata), the green-billed coucal (Centropus chlororhynchos), the ashy-headed babbler (Malacocincla cinereiceps) and the white-headed starling (Sturnia erythropygius) .
There is a legend that says that once there was a dominant lion that lived in the jungle but this fierce and mighty beast can no longer be found in this final refuge for the lion.

Sirenia is an order of manatees and dugongs, Soricomorpha consist of moles, shrews and soledons, and Pholidota consists of pangolins.

I've used an image of a lion because Sinharaja means "kingdom of the lion".
6. This jungle has a truly dramatic landscape where more than sixty mammals enjoy the wild. Located in Australia, it is about 170 kilometers from Darwin. Which jungle is considered to be a bird watcher's paradise?

Answer: Kakadu

The Kakadu jungle of Australia is better known as the Kakadu National Park. This jungle is an attraction to many national and international visitors who enjoy the landscape and wildlife there. Some of the mammals include kangaroos (Macropodidae), dingos (Canis lupus dingo), black wallaroos (Macropus bernardus) and brush-tailed phascogales (Phascogale tapoatafa). There are over two hundred and eighty species of birds that dwell in the Kakadu National Park. The lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) is one example of birds that live there.

I've used an image of a painting of kangaroos for this question since they are included in the wildlife in Kakadu jungle.
7. When one thinks of the Himalayas, we usually think of glorious mountains. However, in the Uttrakhand (formerly Uttaranchal) state of India there is the Nainital Jungle. What is the jungle more familiarly known as?

Answer: The Jim Corbett National Park

The Nainital jungle is more familiarly known as The Jim Corbett National Park. It was once named Hailey National Park after Governor Hailey and was later named after the holy Ram Ramganga River and given the name of Ramganga National Park. When the famous hunter Jim Corbett died in 1957, the park was renamed in his honor. He had hunted man-eating tigers and lions by the hundreds. The Nainital Jungle has temperatures which range between about four and forty-four degrees Celsius depending on the season in the sub-Himalayas. Some of the animals that one can see here include the endangered Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), Himalayan black bears (Selenarctos thibetanus) , leopards (Panthera pardus), Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), golden pheasants (Chrysolophus pictus) and more.

I've used an image of a tiger since Jim Corbett had hunted man-eating tigers as well as lions.
8. Which country is home to the Corcovado jungle which is also known as the Corcovado National Park (established in 1975)?

Answer: Costa Rica

The Corcovado jungle has an amazing biodiversity with wonderful creatures such as the extremely rare Harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), jaguars (Panthera onca) and spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus). The Central American squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii) and mantled howler (Alouatta palliata), are two monkey species that are endemic to the Corcovado. Poisonous snakes like the fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) dwell in this jungle.

The jungle is located in Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula which is in the southwestern part of the country. Costa Rica is situated in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua in the north, Panama in the southeast, the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Caribbean Sea in the east.

The image used in this question is of the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
9. The second largest jungle in the world today spreads into the territories of Cameroon, Central Republic of Congo, Gabon and the southwestern part of the Central African Republic. Which jungle with its vastly unique biodiversity spans these areas?

Answer: The Congo jungle

The Congo jungle spreads over a wide area covering the Congo River and the tributaries of the river which occupy parts of Angola, Cameroon, Central Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia. The countries that have extensive coverage of forest include Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Dongo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The Democratic Republic of Congo has the most jungle coverage at about sixty percent of the Congo Rainforest. The jungle covers about 180 million hectares. There are five national parks in the Congo Jungle that are listed as World Heritage sites. So many plants and animals are found there. In fact, there are over ten thousand plant species, about one thousand types of birds, a couple of hundred types of amphibians and over three hundred species of reptiles. Some of the more familiar animals include lions (Panthera leo), giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis), hippopotami (Hippopotamus amphibious), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), and white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

For this question I chose an image of the Epulu River which lies in the Ituri area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve area of the Congo Jungle. This particular reserve is home to thousands of plants, animals and birds.
10. The Amazon jungle, also called the Amazon rainforest, covers the territory of nine different countries in South America. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Paraguay

The Amazon rainforest runs through Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. Hailed as the largest jungle in our world today it covers an area of 5,500,000 square kilometers. Of all of the different plants and animals in the world about thirty-three percent dwell in the Amazon Jungle. Some of the more unusual ones are the kinkajou (Potos flavus), the electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) and the Amazon giant glass frog (Centrolene pipilatum). One of the more familiar animals is the largest rodent in the world, the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris).

The Amazon rainforest basin is depicted in the image I've presented for this quiz question. The enormity of area is quite apparent when outlined in this map of northern South America.
