Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you head to California seeking entry, you'll likely be turned away at the door to Club 33. Where would you be if you weren't allowed to visit this spot?

Answer: Anaheim

"Club 33? Why haven't I heard of it?"

Slow down, gentle quiztaker. Club 33 is in New Orleans Square in Disneyland. In plain sight. The problem is that it's the park's most secure restaurant/attraction and unless you have a fairly expensive membership you're more than likely never going to see it. People wait for years for the wait list to even open.

Furnished by Disney antiques and home to two luxurious dining rooms, Club 33 is the only location in the entirety of the park to sell alcohol. Aside from requiring an annual fee (thousands of dollars) and, typically, a decade long wait before consideration to join the elite wait list, it does not include the fee you pay to get into the park.

Rich? Got time to spare? Eager to wine and dine the elite? Well...maaaaaybe you'll get in. Just maybe.
2. Ever had the government keep you away? What famous site in the Nevada desert doesn't allow trespassers, perhaps for otherworldly reasons?

Answer: Area 51

"Oh yeah! Area 51-- with the UFOs!"

Well...that's what some people think. Area 51 is technically an Air Force site and, unsurprisingly, it is used by many different groups in the government and military. Isolated in relative desolation, the site is highly sealed off to anyone without the proper authority and you will be turned away immediately if you're trying to trespass. Heck, if you want to see aliens that bad, why not head to Roswell, New Mexico? It's about a day's drive southeast. And they like visitors.
3. Sometimes a site is so sacred that you'll never get to see it. In what country would you not be able to visit the Ise Grand Shrine, a spot typically only seen by a single high priest or priestess?

Answer: Japan

"But Kyle, why can't I visit? Why is it so special?"

The specific shrine here is better known as Kotaijingu, and it's said to contain an artifact given to the Japanese by the God Amaterasu, who is worshiped therein. Although the area is dotted with Shinto shrines, this one is perhaps the most sacred and is thus only visitable by the high priest or priestess overseeing it; that person must be a part of the Royal Family and is usually a sibling of Japan's Emperor.

The Grand Shrine is found in Ise on the island of Honshu. Although the town is sparsely populated, the shrine brings in many visitors seeking religious sites or a spot to extend prayer. None of them will ever get closer than the picture.
4. The city of Mezhgorye is one you'll never visit. It's closed off to visitors. Where would you be turned away from it?

Answer: Russia

"Closed off? In what way?"

Well, closed off in the literal sense. The city is omitted from maps and directional signs in Russia and, although it contains several thousand citizens, you probably don't know them well enough to get in. Found in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Mezhgorye sits on a branch of the Kama and allegedly contains secret government facilities. What exactly those could be is all speculation.

Mezhgorye is one of over two dozen closed cities in Russia; there are another three in Kazakhstan.
5. Relative isolation is one of the reasons you'll be unable to visit North Sentinel Island, but the main reason is the local Sentinelese. Where would you be if you were asked not to make landfall?

Answer: Andaman Islands

"But wait...why don't they want visitors?"

They don't want visitors because they're one of the few societies on the planet who prefer not to have contact with anyone else. North Sentinel Island is situated in a bed of coral reefs and was left uninhabited by colonial settlers coasting along India and other Southeast Asian nations. What they left there was a group of people later known as the Sentinelese. Nowadays, going onto their land usually results in death; they lash out to protect their island. Being asked to avoid it is for your own safety.

North Sentinel Island is part of the Andaman Island archipelago; it's the westernmost location in the chain.
6. I'll stop you early with this one--people used to get turned away from the Sanzhi Pods, but now they've been destroyed. Where were these resort structures originally found?

Answer: Asia

"But I'd like to stay there. Why can't I go?"

Well, probably because it's no longer actually there. Even if it were, however, people wouldn't let you step foot inside--many considered it haunted for years. After several people died during its construction, builders considered it unlucky and even cursed. They were demolished in 2010.

But if you did want to see them you would need to have traveled to Sanzhi in Northern Taiwan.
7. Now destroyed, what UK mental asylum in East Sussex was closed down in 1994 and has since been considered haunted?

Answer: Hellingly Hospital

"Why would I ever go to an asylum, Kyle?"

You're a NUT! That's why! But you can't go to Hellingly. Now is it destroyed, but it was private property, closed down and abandoned in the mid-1990s and considered a site for hauntings due to its beautiful, eerie architecture and history of holding mental patients. Of course, Denbigh Mental Hospital in North Wales held this honour until its fire.

Hellingly, despite its being blocked off, became a hotspot for urban explorers seeking the dilapidated beauty of modern ruins.
8. You're not allowed into this church in Ethiopia, possibly because it contains the original Ark of the Covenant. What is its name?

Answer: Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion

"Kyle, it's just a church. I can go in if I want."

Nuh-uh! The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum, Northern Ethiopia is considered by many to be the home of the actual Ark of the Covenant-- you know, the "Indiana Jones" one? Well, not exactly that one. Only one monk can visit the room containing the Ark (which is actually inside the Chapel of the Tablet); you can't. Ever. No one else can. This is why the truth behind the Ark is contested, and if "Raiders of the Lost Ark" has any say, looking at it is enough to melt your face off anyways.

Maybe it's for the best.
9. Well...if you're into spelunking I'll let the authorities stop you outside this part of Carlsbad Caverns in the United States. What cave is blocked off from leisurely exploration?

Answer: Lechuguilla Cave

"I don't like caves, Kyle."

GOOD! Then I don't need to convince you to to stay away before you're turned away. Lechuguilla Cave is a part of the Carlsbad Caverns Cave System in New Mexico, U.S., and they're the fourth largest cave system in the States (seventh in the world). The efforts to explore the cave continue--it's length is hundreds of kilometers long and it contains many unique rock formations hidden from the surface. Because of this, it's only explorable by scientists. So are you a scientist? Huh?
10. Seeking out a mountain to scale? Well, you're not going to the top of this one. What mountain in Tibet is allegedly home to the Hindu God, Shiva?

Answer: Mount Kailash

"Kyle, now you're being absurd. It's a mountain. You can't stop me!"

Well, I can't but someone will. Mount Kailash in the Tibetan Plateau is not for climbing because it's sacred to at least a few different major religions. The Hindu people claim that its summit is the home of Shiva. The Buddhists say it's the home of Demchok. You aren't allowed to climb it. No one is. The Chinese government banned all ascents. The best you'll be able to do is join the pilgrimage around the mountain, a fifty-two kilometer trek around its base.
