Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lake Issyk-kul in Kyrgyzstan is the country's largest lake and is fed by the Djyrgalan and Tyup Rivers. What is notable about this lake?

Answer: It's the second-largest high-altitude lake in the world.

Lake Issyk-kul is smaller only than Lake Titicaca in South America when it comes to mountain lakes. Covering more than 6000 square kilometers (2400 square miles), the lake has no visible outlet. While not freshwater, the lake is much less saline than the oceans.

It is the tenth-largest lake in the world and the second-largest saline lake, after the Caspian Sea. Because it never freezes in the winter, Issyk-kul's name is derived from Kyrgyz for "hot lake". Several endangered species of fish live in the lake's fragile ecosystem.
2. Most people think of the Central Asian area where Kyrgyzstan is located as the grouping of the "-stans", mainly Muslim former-Soviet republics. However, which country without a "-stan" in its name is on Kyrgyzstan's eastern border?

Answer: China

Kyrgyzstan is north of India and Nepal, which border Pakistan, and Mongolia is landlocked by Russian and China. Kyrgyzstan also borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
3. Which of the following natural or man-made disasters would not be associated with Kyrgyzstan?

Answer: Tornadoes

Nuclear waste, buried by the Soviet Union all over Central Asia, still releases radiation that can have destructive impact on plants, animals, and humans in the area. Earthquakes do occur in Kyrgyzstan, and flooding from mountain thaws can be a serious problem, despite Kyrgyzstan's central location in Asia. Tornadoes, however, do not strike Central Asia.
4. Although Kyrgyzstan is landlocked, it borders the largest lake in the world, the Caspian Sea.

Answer: False

Kyrgyzstan does not border the Caspian, which touches Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia. Ala-Kul, Chatyr-Kul, and Issyk Kul are three of the lakes found within Kyrgyzstan.
5. Kyrgyzstan has legal territory within the country of Uzbekistan. What name is given to a geographical territory of a country that does not border the country?

Answer: Exclave

An exclave of a country is a territory of a country with which the territory does not physically border. An enclave, on the other hand, is any territory whose geographical borders lie entirely within another country.

The city of Barak, Kyrgyzstan lies entirely within Uzbekistan, a couple of kilometers away from the border. Therefore, Barak is an exclave of Kyrgyzstan and an enclave of Uzbekistan.
6. Kyrgyzstan is one of the most mountainous countries in the world. Which range does not pass through it?

Answer: Himalayas

Mountains cover 80% of Kyrgyzstan, and 90% of the country lies 1500 meters above sea level. The Alai Mountains are a part of the Tian Shans and cut through the southwestern part of the country; the main part of the range is farther east. The Pamirs are farther south and run in southern Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. The Himalayas, however, do not enter Kyrgyzstan: they run through Nepal, India, and China, which are farther southeast.
7. Arslanbob, located in the Jalal-Abad province of Kyrgyzstan, is the world's biggest natural growth forest devoted to which tree?

Answer: Walnut

Arslanbob is well-known for its scenic beauty. During the summer, visitors come from all over the world to visit the site's beautiful waterfalls and forests. A moderate temperature allows an extremely large diversity of walnut trees to grow in the area.
8. Which of the following best describes Kyrgyzstan's size?

Answer: Approximately the size of Nebraska

Kyrgyzstan is not large: the total area is a shade less than 200,000 square kilometers, part of which is water. Its longest borders are with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
9. Unlike neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan, the environment of Kyrgyzstan has not been devastated through the large-scale production of which crop? This crop was also grown in the Antebellum southern United States.

Answer: Cotton

Central Asia is one of the world's largest producers of cotton- China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan are all in the top ten for most bales produced per year. However, cotton is a difficult crop to plant. It requires a tremendous amount of water from the ground, and farmers constantly must spray the plant with pesticides to keep insects like the boll weevil from eating the crop.

In addition, cotton drains the earth of organic nutrients very quickly, which limits production. In areas like Uzbekistan, this has caused desertification, the formation of desert from once-arable land, with devastating results.
10. What capital city of Kyrgyzstan comes from a Kyrgyz word for a churn used to make fermented mare's milk?

Answer: Bishkek

Bishkek was founded in 1825 as the city of Pishpek, and its name changed to Frunze for most of the twentieth century after Bolshevik Mikhail Frunze. The city is said to be gorgeous: the Tien Shan mountains provide a spectacular backdrop landscape, and narrow irrigation canals in the city provide water to the many trees that shade the area's sweeping boulevards. Bishkek is rapidly becoming more modern: it is Kyrgyzstan's industrial and financial center as well.
