Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The flag of Montenegro was adopted in 2004, and consists of the country's coat of arms on which colour background?

Answer: Red

The flag is mainly red, with a gold border and the coat of arms in the centre. Montenegro achieved independent statehood on 13 July 2004, having previously been part of Yugoslavia. The coat of arms is a two-headed golden eagle, with one side holding an orb and the other a sceptre.

There is a shield in the centre, with a gold lion passant, which means it is shown as walking with one front paw raised.
2. Montenegro has a coastline on the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. Which country borders the western part of the Adriatic?

Answer: Italy

Albania also borders the Adriatic's eastern part, and lies south of Montenegro. Greece is even further south, and does not have any coastline on the Adriatic and France is nowhere near Montenegro or the Adriatic. The coastline runs for 193km, beginning from the north with the Bay of Kotor, which is often referred to as Europe's most southerly fjord.

It is actually a drowned river bed, called a ria. The coast has several holiday resorts, including Budva and Ulcinj.
3. Montenegro adopted the Euro as its currency in 2002, having previously used which of these?

Answer: Deutsche mark

Montenegro had no currency of its own and had been using the German currency, as had the neighbouring Kosovo, prior to the introduction of the Euro. Although not a member of the European Union, Montenegro decided to use the Euro once the Deutsche mark was withdrawn from use.

The move had not been without controversy, with both the European Commission and the European Central Bank expressing disquiet.
4. Montenegro is bordered by which country to the west?

Answer: Croatia

Montenegro is bordered by only a small area of Croatia, but as this includes the city of Dubrovnik it is a busy part of the country. The major part of the western border is with Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Serbia lying on its eastern border. Kosovo is to the east and Albania to the south.
5. Which fictional detective was described as having been born in Montenegro?

Answer: Nero Wolfe

Nero Wolfe was created by Rex Stout, and most of his cases were set in New York. In the 1957 novel 'Fourth of July Picnic', Wolfe revealed that he had been born in Montenegro and spent his boyhood there. He left at the age of sixteen, and eventually settled in America where he became a naturalised American citizen.

In 'The Black Mountain', published in 1954, Wolfe actually returned to Montenegro to investigate the death of his friend, Marko Vukcic.
6. The main religion in Montenegro is which of these?

Answer: Orthodox Christianity

Nearly 75% of Montenegrins claim to be members of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is the major Christian religion in Eastern Europe. Muslims make up a substantial minority, at around 18%, with Roman Catholics forming only 3.5%, based on 2003 figures. All three religions are officially recognised by the state.

Although the government of Yugoslavia was communist, the majority of the population still adhered to their religions.
7. The official national anthem of Montenegro was adopted in 2011 and is called 'Oj, svijetla majska zoro'. This translates as 'Oh, bright dawn of' which springtime month?

Answer: May

The anthem is based on a traditional Montenegrin folk song, with the origins of the tune lost in the mists of time. The lyrics were adapted by Sekula Drljevic during the 1930s, but it took some time, and a referendum, before the new anthem was officially adopted. There has been controversy over the use of his lyrics, as Drljevic was a Nazi collaborator during World War II.
8. The island of Sveti Stefan in Montenegro is well-known for what?

Answer: Luxury hotel

The island lies to the southeast of Budva and is joined to the mainland by a causeway. It was established as an exclusive resort for those who could afford it in the 1960s, although it fell from favour during the breakup of Yugoslavia. Among celebrities who visited it during its heyday were Elizabeth Taylor, the UK's Princess Margaret and Kirk Douglas.

The resort was re-developed in 2009, when it became the property of Aman Resorts and the hotel gained five star status.
9. Lying on the border between Montenegro and Albania is the country's largest lake. What is its name?

Answer: Lake Skadar

Lake Skadar is the largest in the Balkan region, with two-thirds lying in Montenegro and the remainder in Albania. The Montenegrin part has been a national park since 1983. The Albanian part is managed as a Nature Reserve. The lake is also known as Shkodėr in Albanian and Scutari in Italian.

The other lakes are all in Italy, with Garda and Como both being in the north of the country and Bolsena, the fifth largest lake in Italy, lying between Rome and the region of Tuscany.
10. Montenegro forms part of the catchment area for which major European river?

Answer: Danube

Although the Danube does not touch Montenegro, two of the country's rivers, the Tara and Piva, flow through it before joining to form the river Drina. That, in turn, flows into the river Sava, which is a major tributary of the Danube, joining it at Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Consequently, Montenegro is a member of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube river.

The Loire is wholly in France and the Volga is in Russia. The Rhine rises in the Swiss Alps and flows across Europe into the North Sea.
