Lost in Greece Trivia Quiz

Their language is all Greek to me, so it's not surprising that I got lost - again. I didn't lose my camera, though, so I have some photos to help you answer these questions.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greece is one of several countries considered to be located, or partly located, on the Balkan Peninsula. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Ukraine

The Balkan Peninsula includes a surprising number of countries, with Slovenia, Macedonia and Serbia to add to those included in the answer options. Greece has, at times, been classed as being a Mediterranean country, but this was more to do with politics than geography. Physically, Greece is a Balkan country.

Ukraine, whose flag is shown in the photo, is too far north to be located on the Balkans.
2. The highest mountain of Greece is Mount Olympus. Its highest peak is called Mytikas, which, in English, translates as what part of the human body?

Answer: Nose

Mount Olympus is well known for being the mythical home of the Greek gods. Mytikas is where they were supposed to live - well, you'd expect the gods to pick the highest spot. The second highest peak is called Stefani, and is also known as the throne of Zeus.

The photo of a box of tissues might have helped you towards the correct answer.
3. Located on the Peloponnese peninsula, the Foloi forest is primarily composed of which trees?

Answer: Oak

The forest covers close to 10,000 acres and has been around since ancient times. The name derives from the belief that centaurs lived there - Folos, or Pholus, was the chief centaur - and Heracles is said to have given the forest its name after accidentally killing Folos. The forest consists mainly of oak trees, with the Hungarian oak, Quercus frainetto, being by far the most common.

The photo clue is a literal one this time, showing an oak leaf growing in the Foloi oak forest.
4. This Greek dish, similar to a doner kebab, is known as which of these?

Answer: Gyro

The method of cooking meat on a vertical rotisserie was brought to Greece by Turkish immigrants in the mid twentieth century. The meat is most often chicken or pork, although all types of meat can be found in a gyro. The meat is wrapped in a pita bread along with tomato and onion and sauces.

Moussaka is made from meat, potato and aubergine, topped with a white or cheese sauce. Tzatziki is a sauce made from yogurt and cucumber and often found in a gyro. Baklava is a sweet pastry which includes honey and nuts.
5. The second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, is named after a princess from which region?

Answer: Macedonia

The city is also known as Thessalonica or Salonica/Salonika, and is located in north-eastern Greece. Traditionally, the name comes from the half sister of Alexander the Great, with the first part meaning Thessalian and the final part, 'nike, meaning 'victory', as in the name of the Greek goddess Nike. The city dates from around 315 BC.

The map shows you the location of Macedonia, which should have ruled out the Ionian Islands and the Peloponnese for those who have some knowledge of Greek geography.
6. The motto of Greece is 'Eleftheria i Thanatos'. which translates as 'Freedom or ___'?

Answer: Death

During the early part of the nineteenth century, Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire. The motto was used during the struggles for independence, which lasted from 1821 until 1829 and was adopted once Greece had established itself as a nation.

The photo hint isn't the most subtle, but should have confirmed your thoughts regarding the correct conclusion to the motto.
7. Which of these, birthplace of one of the UK's Royal Family, is the second largest of the Ionian Islands?

Answer: Corfu

Known as Kerkyra in Greek, Corfu is second to Kefalonia in size among the Ionian Islands. There are seven main islands, lying mostly off the western coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. Kythira is included as one of the Ionian Island although it is located south of the Pelopponese Peninsula.

The photo clue has nothing directly to do with Greece, as it depicts the coat of arms on the walls of Edinburgh Castle. I included it as Corfu is the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
8. Which gulf, lying within the Ionian Sea, separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese Peninsula?

Answer: Gulf of Corinth

Known at one time as the Gulf of Lepanto, the Gulf of Corinth is a long, narrow inlet in south-western Greece. The Gulf of Chania is in Crete, the Gulf of Arta is also in the Ionian Sea, but further north and the Molos Gulf is part of the island of Ithaca.

The photo clue shows the decoration at the top of a Corinthian column.
9. Located on Mount Parnassus, the Temple of Apollo was attended by a priestess known as the Pythia, or the oracle of which place?

Answer: Delphi

Not only the home of the famous oracle, Delphi was believed by the Greeks to be the centre of the world. They called it the omphalos, or navel, and a marble monument called the Omphalos of Delphi is on display in Delphi's museum. The remains of many buildings of Ancient Delphi can still be seen, including the Temple of Apollo, a hippodrome and theatre.

The photo clue shows some of the ruins of Delphi, with Parnassus in the background.
10. The island of Spinalonga, once used as a leper colony, is part of which Greek island?

Answer: Crete

Situated in the Gulf of Elounda, Spinalonga lies off the north-eastern coast of Crete. It was used as a colony for sufferers of leprosy from 1903 until 1957, one of the last places where lepers were kept isolated. According to most sources, the patients were well treated with food and water supplied along with regular medical attention. The island is now uninhabited and a tourist attraction.

The photo clue shows the minotaur, the legendary monster kept in the labyrinth at Knossos, also on Crete.
