Answer: King George V

The iconic Gateway of India is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mumbai. Construction of this exquisite basalt monument was started in 1915 to commemorate the visit of King George V and his wife Queen Mary in 1911. British architect George Wittest designed the monument using an Indo-Saracenic style.

When India gained independence in 1947, the last of the British ships left from the Gateway to India. Located in Mumbai Harbor, the Gateway lies on the water's edge. It is usually the first thing a visitor sees when coming to Mumbai by boat.
2. Taking up over 500 acres in the city of Mumbai, Dharavi is one of the world's largest ___? (Choose the best answer to put in the blank)

Answer: Ghettos

With a population of close to one million people, Dharavi is one of the largest ghettos in the world. This slum has over 5,000 businesses that include many one room factories. These goods are transported all over the world. It is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious community is one of the most densely populated places on the earth.

It has been plagued with epidemics mostly due to poor sanitation. In the late 19th century the location was a large swamp, making Dharavi a fairly new community. India is working hard at improving the standard of living for the people of Dharavi, and don't expect to see it on most tours of the city.
3. Mumbai was, at one time, seven different islands.

Answer: True

At one time, Mumbai was a cluster of seven different islands. The islands were inhabited by the Kolis tribe, whose life centered around the sea. These seven islands were joined together in 1862 through intensive land reclamation projects. The city still has a very low elevation and is prone to flooding especially during the rainy season.
4. What is the purpose of the Haji Ali Dargah, a beautiful white edifice that sits on the water's edge of the sea?

Answer: It is a Muslim mosque

Located in the southern part of Mumbai, the Haji Ali Dargah is a beautiful mosque that is built over the tomb of Haji Ali, one of the most revered figures in Islam. This beautiful building was built about 500 yards out to sea on a tiny islet, making it accessible only at low tide. During high tide the mosque appears to be floating on the water as the causeway leading to it lies below the water.

The white marble reflects the sun causing a glow to surround the building at dawn and dusk.
5. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai is world famous for its small population of which of the following animals?

Answer: Tigers

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is surrounded by Mumbai's concrete jungle on three sides. Created in 1974, this park is a respite of calm and serenity at the edge of the city. The green landscapes are a real change from hustle and bustle of this busy city.

The park is home to a small population of tigers, the famous Kanheri Cave complex, as well as Lake Tulsi and Lake Vihar, which help provide drinking water to the city. Huge flocks of birds provide and orchestra of music to visitors in the park. This photo shows the park in the foreground, while in the distance you can see the city of Mumbai.
6. The city of Bombay had its name changed in 1981 to Mumbai in honor of the Earl of Ceylon, George Mumbai.

Answer: False

The name Mumbai is an eponym derived from the Koli goddess Mumbadevi and the word Aai, which means "mother" in the language of Marathi. It is believed that the word "Bombay" was derived from the Old Portuguese term "bom baim" which meant "good little bay". Throughout history this city has also been known as Kakamuchee and Galajunkja.
7. Thousands of men in Mumbai work as dabbawalas. What would expect to see a dabbawala doing during his day at work?

A dabbawala, which means "he who carries a container" is the term given to thousands of men who are responsible for transporting and delivering around 200,000 lunch boxes of freshly cooked food to the city's officer workers every day. This delivery system makes use of trains, bicycles and carts and was started as a service to the British office workers and now serves everyone.

A dabbawala will pick up the empty lunch boxes, bring hot meals, and take away the container to be washed. What a wonderful idea!
8. What is the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, a large open-air location, used for?

Answer: It is a huge clothing laundry.

Dirty laundry from all over Mumbai is brought to Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat. This massive open-air laundry has rows of stone cubicles in which dhobis (washerman) do the laundry by hand. Hundreds of pounds of laundry are washed by hand every day at the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat.
9. Which of the following beaches finds its home at the edge of Mumbai and is considered by many to be one of the most dangerous beaches in India to swim?

Answer: Aksa

Aksa Beach is filled with clean sand, little pollution, and a wonderful view. If you decide to visit, be very, very careful. The beach is known for its terrible rip-tides, undertows, and quicksand. There are signs up and down the beach advising against swimming, and drownings are commonplace. For the most-part if you are looking to swim, Mumbai may not be your ideal destination.

The other three options might be what you're looking for looking for...sadly they are all located in Brazil.
10. Which of these bodies of water can you see while visiting Mumbai?

Answer: Arabian Sea

The northernmost regions of the Indian Ocean, that lies on the eastern coast of India is known as the Arabian Sea. The Ocean can be seen from various parts of the city and becomes a real danger during monsoon season, when it is known to flood parts of the city. Most of Mumbai lies at or below sea level and flooding is just a part of life in the city.

The moderately hot weather of the city can feel even hotter due to the high humidity caused by its coastal location. A visit to the city in July and August will subject the visitor to almost constant rain and weeks without sunshine while the city waits for the incoming weather that hits during monsoon season.
