Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When people think of peninsulas, most people first envision a famous piece of footwear...namely, the Italian Peninsula. As with most peninsulas, Italy is surrounded on three sides by water. Which of these seas is not found along the coast of this high-heeled peninsula?

Answer: Aegean Sea

The coast of Italy is formed by the Adriatic Sea on the east and by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west. To the south lies the Ionian Sea. These seas are all arms of the Mediterranean Sea. Between the heel and the toe of the Italian Peninsula lies the Gulf of Taranto, while to the north of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west coast can be found the Ligurian Sea, another arm of the Mediterranean that borders on Italy. I have heard that one might find some excellent seafood in restaurants of that fine country...
2. The world's largest peninsula, at 1,250,000 square miles, can be found in which continent?

Answer: Asia

As you might have guessed, the world's largest peninsula is the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian peninsula contains Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen. This peninsula is surrounded by the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.

Some have suggested that there might be petroleum within the vicinity, which is largely covered by desert.
3. True or false: Alaska is the largest peninsula in the United States.

Answer: True

When people think of peninsulas in the United States, Alaska perhaps does not come to mind. But indeed, the entire state of Alaska is one big peninsula, surrounded by the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean on the south, the Bering and Chukchi Seas on the west and the Arctic Ocean on the north. All told, the Alaskan Peninsula is about 570,000 sq. miles in size, making it not only the largest peninsula in the United States but also the Western Hemisphere.
4. Ox Bel Ha, the world's largest underwater cave system, is located at which peninsula, also famous for the wonderful scuba diving off its coast?

Answer: Yucatan

The Ox Bel Ha cave system is so large, it has yet to be entirely explored. Some suggest that there could be over 100 miles worth of caves within this system that will someday collapse, as it is formed out of fragile limestone. Speleologists and scuba divers unite!
5. One of the most exciting looking peninsulas for map lovers is the Malay Peninsula of Southeast Asia. Which tiny country lies right off the coast, at the very tip of this peninsula?

Answer: Singapore

Singapore, one of the world's cleanest countries, is a tiny island that can be found across the shore from Johor Baharu, a Malaysian city. The Malay Peninsula is mostly Malaysian territory, with an extension of Thailand mixed in for spice. Surrounding this peninsula are the Andaman Sea and the Strait of Malacca on the west and the South China Sea to the east.
6. The Crimean Peninsula has a coastline on which of these seas?

Answer: Black Sea

It is into the Black Sea that the celebrated Crimean Peninsula penetrates. To the east of Crimea is the Sea of Azov, while the Black Sea surrounds it to the south and west. The Crimean War was named for this relatively small peninsula, and famous talks at Yalta also took place there during World War II.
7. Which famed peninsula is surrounded by the Bellingshausen Sea, the Scotia Sea and the Weddell Sea?

Answer: Antarctic Peninsula

These seas are now a part of what geographers have deemed the 'Southern Ocean'. As a result of melting ice in the Antarctic, the Southern Ocean is a fast growing body of water, as are the seas mentioned in the question...sad, but true!
8. One of these peninsulas is not comprised of at least two different countries, but which?

Answer: Peloponnesian Peninsula

While the Korean Peninsula contains both North and South Korea, the Iberian Peninsula Spain, Portugal and Andorra, and the Scandinavian Peninsula Norway and Sweden, the Peloponnisos is entirely to be found in Greece. A war was named for the Peloponnisos (namely, the Peloponnesian War), making two peninsulas within this small quiz that were at the center of big wars.

This proves, once again, that everyone loves peninsulas...even to the point of fighting over them.
9. The Kola, Yamal and Gyda Peninsulas may all be found in what rather large country?

Answer: Russia

On the north coast of Russia there are quite a number of large peninsulas, including the three mentioned in the question, the Taymyr Peninsula, the Chukchi Peninsula, among others. The largest Russian peninsula, however, does not extend into the Arctic Ocean, but rather into the Pacific Ocean.

This is the Kamchatka Peninsula, bordered on the west by the Sea of Okhotsk and to the east by the Bering Sea.
10. Which of the 48 contiguous U.S. states consists of not one but two large peninsulas?

Answer: Michigan

Michigan consists of the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, both surrounded by the fresh water Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.) Florida and Washington both contain only one major peninsula each. Kansas does not consist of a peninsula. Thank you for having a go at this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it.
