Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Russian peninsula, located entirely within Murmansk Oblast, lies between the Barents Sea and the White Sea?

Answer: Kola

Nothing gets the juices flowing like starting with a fill-in-the-blank.

Found mostly north of the Arctic Circle, the Kola Peninsula actually enjoys relatively warm winter temperatures thanks to the Gulf Stream. Its name in Finnish, Kuolan niemimaa, translates approximately to "peninsula of slobber".
2. Which peninsula emerges by Bristol Bay and terminates near the Aleutian Islands?

Answer: Alaska Peninsula

The Alaska Peninsula, along with the Aleutian Islands, form a boundary between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Bristol Bay is an arm of the Bering Sea near the southern coast of Alaska. The Seward Peninsula is also found in Alaska and is named after William H. Seward, who negotiated the purchase of the current U.S. state from Russia in 1867.
3. The city of Manado is found on which peninsula of the island Sulawesi? It separates the Gulf of Tomini from the Celebes Sea.

Answer: Minahassa Peninsula

The Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly called Celebes) resembles the letter "K" and consists of the South, East, South-east, and Minahassa Peninsulas. The Christ Blessing Statue, Asia's second tallest statue of Christ at 50 m (158.3 ft) tall, is found in Manado, the city at the eastern tip of the Minahassa Peninsula.
4. Which of these peninsulas would you find in Australia?

Answer: Cape York Peninsula

You'll find the Zamboanga Peninsula in the west of the island Mindanao in the Philippines. The Coromandel Peninsula is a protrusion in the north of the North Island in New Zealand separating the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty. The Huon Peninsula is a rugged, rounded peninsula in the northeast of Papua New Guinea which juts out above Huon Gulf and the Gulf of Papua. Finally, the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia, is a large prominence of flat land and unspoiled wilderness separating the Gulf of Carpentaria from the Coral Sea.
5. Leizhou Peninsula is part of China's Guangdong province and is the southernmost point of continental China. While it is surrounded by ample water on two sides, on its third it reaches just 30 km (19 mi) or so away from which island?

Answer: Hainan

The Leizhou Peninsula juts out between the Gulf of Tonkin in the west and the South China Sea in the east. It is separated from Hainan Island (China's smallest and southernmost province) by the narrow Qiongzhou Strait, also called Hainan Strait. The Shandong or Jiaodong is another Chinese peninsula; it faces the Bohai and Yellow Seas in the east of the country.
6. You'll find the northernmost point of New Zealand's main islands somewhere along this peninsula, which lies at the northwestern end of the larger North Auckland Peninsula.

Answer: Aupouri Peninsula

The Aupouri Peninsula lies between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is home to a number of capes vying for the title of New Zealand's northernmost point (of the main islands, that is). One of these is Cape Reinga, of the phrase "From Cape Reinga to The Bluff" which is meant to refer to New Zealand in its entirety from north to south.

The rest of the choices are much smaller peninsulas on New Zealand's North Island.
7. The European peninsula known as Gallipoli is surrounded by the Aegean Sea in the west and the Dardanelles strait in the east, but which country is it a part of?

Answer: Turkey

What makes Gallipoli a European peninsula is the fact that it is part of Turkey's East Thrace, or the geographically European section of Turkey. Its name comes from the Greek "Kallipolis", or "Beautiful City", referring to a city which lies on the peninsula.
8. Found in the North Channel, this Scottish peninsula has a few close island neighbors like Arran in the east and Islay in the west.

Answer: Kintyre

The southwesternmost point of the Kintyre peninsula, called the Mull of Kintyre, was the subject of a 1977 Paul McCartney/Wings song. This song, "Mull of Kintyre," became the first single in the UK to sell over two million copies. Knapdale is the stretch of land which joins Kintyre to mainland Scotland, specifically to Argyll.
9. "Asia Minor" is a term which may be used synonymously with which peninsula?

Answer: Anatolian

The Anatolian Peninsula, which makes up about two thirds of the Asian part of Turkey, lies between the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Along with the term "Asia Minor", it refers to the westernmost part of the Asian continent. Both the Malay and Indochinese Peninsulas are found in Southeast Asia, while the Liaodong Peninsula is in northeastern China and partially separates Korea Bay from the Bohai Sea.
10. You'll find this peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. It shares its name with the federal subject of Russia of which it is a part.

Answer: Kamchatka

The Kamchatka Peninsula, part of Kamchatka Krai, is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volcanoes of Kamchatka, as well as Geyser Valley. The latter is the second largest concentration of geysers in the world, which was flooded by mudflow in 2007. It is not yet known how much of the area was permanently changed by this natural disaster.
