Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which city is Vigelandsparken located? This is the park with all the stone statues and monuments.

Answer: Oslo

Oslo has a population of about 500.000, and is the biggest city in Norway. Oslo was once named Christiania (1624-1925). From Oslo you can go by boat to, for example, Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
2. Which is the highest mountain in Norway?

Answer: Galdhøpiggen

Galdhøpiggen is 2469m high. Each year there is a skiing arrangement where people walk up to the top and ski down. It's very popular as the age of the participants varies from 10 to 70.
3. How many countries does Norway border?

Answer: 3

These countries are Russia, Finland and Sweden.
4. How long is the border between Norway and Russia?

Answer: 196km

Norway is situated on the western side of the Scandinavian peninsula. Thanks to its location Norway has access to rich oil resources in the North Sea. The Russian border is under constant watch from both Norwegian and Russian border patrols. During the long winter soldiers ski the entire length of the border.

This takes several days. In Norway, military service is obligatory, and serving as a border guard is very popular, albeit tough.
5. Which of these towns is closest to the Russian border?

Answer: Kirkenes

Kirkenes is a mere 15km from the Russian border. During the Cold War Norway was one of only two NATO member countries that bordered Russia. This would ensure Norway full protection from its allies in case of an invasion from the east. The US has many military storage facilties in the country, where military equipment, such as radios, vehicles and weapons, is kept in case of a Russian invasion.

These are mostly located in the north of Norway.
6. From which city in Norway did the Black Plague spread throughout the land?

Answer: Bergen

According to popular and scientific belief a ship sailed in to Bergen from England in 1349. Bergen was at that time called Bjørgvin. Over a period of 200 years, the plague wiped out half the population of Norway. This led to a political weakening culminating in Norway formally becoming a part of Denmark in 1526.
7. What is the name of the wife of King Harald V?

Answer: Sonja

Haakon Magnus is the son of King Harald V and Queen Sonja and he is the next in line as heir to the throne. The maiden name of Queen Sonja is actually Haraldsen (which sort of translates to Harald's son).
8. What was the name of the infamous Norwegian traitor during World War II?

Answer: Vidkun Quisling

Vidkun Quisling (1887-1945) was Minister of Defense from 1931-33. In 1933 he formed his own National-Socialist party (Nazi-party). He had private talks with Hitler, during which he proposed to commit a coup-d'etat and call for German back-up. When Germany invaded Norway in 1940 he proclaimed himself Prime Minister, but was "let go" by the Germans after only six days. During the trials after the war, he was sentenced to death for treason, and he was executed on 10 September 1945.
9. Which is the only Norwegian film to have won an Academy award?

Answer: Kon-Tiki

Kon-Tiki was a film about the expedition of the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who set out to prove that the people of the Polynesian islands originated from South America, and not Asia. The boat, made of balsawood, sucessfully sailed a distance of 8,000 km from Peru to an uninhabited island in the Pacific, thus proving the theory.

The name Kon-Tiki is the name the ancient Incas had for the Sun God (Con Tiki Viracocha). The documentary was awarded an Oscar in 1952.
10. What is the distance between the southernmost point of Norway, Lindesnes, and the northernmost point, Nordkinn? (This question refers to mainland Norway.)

Answer: 1752 km

Norway is the fifth largest country in Europe in area. Norway is however the longest country in Europe. If you drive the main road from Oslo to Kirkenes it's a distance of just over 2500 km.
