Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first stop is in southwest Pennsylvania. This two-digit town is also the home of a lumber company which goes by the same name. Which town is this?

Answer: Eighty Four

Originally called Smithville, the town changed its name in 1884 to Eighty Four because of postal confusion with another town of the same name. There is much speculation about why the small village, with a population of about 5,000 in 2012, was given the name of Eighty Four.

Many think it was because of Grover Cleveland's victory in the US election in 1884. Others think it is because of the route marker on the nearby Baltimore and Ohio Railway. Another idea is that the postmaster renamed it to the year when the town's post office opened.

He didn't have a big imagination!
2. A small hamlet in Lincolnshire, this hamlet is about twenty miles north of Peterborough, five miles east of Bourne, fifty miles east of Leicester, and is conveniently called what?

Answer: Twenty

Located on the A151 between Bourne and Spaling, the town was named after the Twenty Foot Trench located along the road, which was once an ancient Roman road. The town does not have a church, and the railway station closed in 1959. No population statistics are kept for the village, but the area around is a farming based community.
3. This town is in San Bernadino County, Southern California. There are more palm trees in the city than in the name, however. What is the name of this town?

Answer: Twentynine Palms

The town was the named for the 29 palm trees that were growing in the Oasis of Mara in Joshua Tree National Park when gold miners settled in the 19th century. The town was established in 1920 and had 25,000 residents in 2010. Even though the town is in the Mojave Desert, its proximity to Los Angeles, and the town's funny name has meant its appearance in pop culture. Frank Sinatra recorded a song called "The Lady from 29 Palms" in 1939, and Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant sang "29 Palms" in 1993.
4. Originally known as Round Hill, this town in Queensland, Australia is named for the year in which James Cook and the HM Bark Endeavor landed in Queensland for the first time. What is the name of this community?

Answer: 1770

The town changed its name in 1970 to celebrate the bicentennial of Cook's landing in Australia. Every May the town puts on a reenactment of the landing as part of the 1770 Festival. About 500 km north of Brisbane, the town is a popular tourist attraction on Queensland's Discovery Coast, as are four national parks nearby.

There is a small year-round population of around 200 in 2010, but 1770 holds a large holiday population in the warmer months.
5. In Quebec, this city is at the intersection of the St. Lawrence and St. Maurice rivers. Being Quebec, the name is in French. What is the name of this city?

Answer: Trois-Rivières

Even though it only sits at the confluence, Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers) is named such because of the split in the St. Maurice River before it meets the St. Lawrence. The split is formed by two islands, and gives the river three mouths, hence the name.

The town was mentioned by Jacques Cartier in his 1535 voyage, and named in 1599 by Captain Dupont-Gravé. The city is known as the "Poetry Capital of Canada".
6. The origin of the name of this town in South Carolina is unknown, but with the ZIP Code 29666, what is the name of this town?

Answer: Ninety Six

The town's name derives from the second and third digits in the ZIP code, hence Ninety Six, South Carolina. Many people speculate the name is from an old Indian myth, where the nearest Cherokee settlement was ninety-six miles away, or a Welsh expression "nanty-suchs" which means "dry gulch".

The town had a population of around 2,000 in 2010. Ninety Six native Bill Voiselle became the first player in Major League Baseball history to wear his hometown on his jersey, when he wore the number 96 during his eight year career in the 1940s.
