Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Ohio city sits on the banks of the Ohio River?

Answer: Cincinnati

Cincinnati is in the southwest corner of Ohio at the confluence of the Licking River with the Ohio River. The Ohio River forms the southern and part of the eastern border of Ohio. Cincinnati's location, bordering the slave state of Kentucky, made it a popular stop on "the Underground Railroad". Many influential abolitionists made Cincinnati home.
2. Where would you go if you wanted to see the Ohio State Buckeyes play in "The Horseshoe"?

Answer: Columbus

Columbus is Ohio's capital and in the 1990s it became the state's most populous city. It is the home of the main campus of The Ohio State University. It is often referred to as the nation's biggest college town. "The Horseshoe" is the nickname of Ohio Stadium where the Ohio State Buckeyes play American football.

The stadium, which had a 2019 capacity of over 102,000, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
3. Which of these cities historically receives the most "lake-effect snow"?

Answer: Cleveland

Cleveland is located on the shore of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio. Lake-effect snow occurs when a cold air mass crosses a large body of warmer water. The air picks up water vapor that freezes and then deposits snow on the downwind shores. In Cleveland lake-effect snow remains a threat until Lake Erie freezes over, usually in late January or early February.
4. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves the rural landscape along the Cuyahoga River that lies between Akron and what other Ohio city?

Answer: Cleveland

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park was the first national park in Ohio. The 32,000-acre park was established in 2000. Attractions include a scenic railroad and the Ohio and Erie Canal towpath trail. The national park is unique because it is located in the middle of an urban area, and it has other parks ran by other identities within its boundaries.
5. In which Ohio city can you see a building that has a dome shaped like half a giant football?

Answer: Canton

Canton is located about sixty miles south of Cleveland. Canton is the location of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It was chosen because professional American football started in the city and its team, the Canton Bulldogs, was the first two-time NFL champion in 1922 and 1923. Construction began in 1962 and the building features the iconic football-shaped dome.
6. What Ohio city once had a full-sized replica of the Santa Maria moored on the Scioto River?

Answer: Columbus

The project to build a replica of the Santa Maria - Christopher Columbus' flagship - started in the late 1980s as part of a celebration commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the New World. Due to economics and other urban development projects, the ship was disassembled.

The city of Columbus is named for the Italian explorer, although there is no known connection.
7. The Lincoln Highway went through which Ohio city, which was home to another President, William McKinley?

Answer: Canton

The Lincoln Highway was completed in 1913 as one of the first transcontinental roads for cars in the USA. It ran from New York City to San Francisco. It was named in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Canton's William McKinley, the 25th US president, was also assassinated. Canton has its share of presidential history with a monument and library for McKinley and the First Ladies National Historic Site.
8. John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth. In what Ohio town, which shares its name with the Massachusetts city where Harvard University is located, was Glenn born?

Answer: Cambridge

Glenn was born in Cambridge but grew up in nearby New Concord, Ohio. He orbited the earth three times during his historic space mission in 1962. In 1988, Glenn returned to space at the age of 77. He was a US Senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999.
9. What Ohio city's wine industry was celebrated in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "Catawba Wine"? (Hint: It ends with, "The winds and the birds shall deliver, To the Queen of the West, in her garlands dressed, On the banks of the Beautiful River")

Answer: Cincinnati

Ohio wine has been around since the 1820s. Nicholas Longworth introduced Catawba grapes to the Cincinnati area. These grapes were used to make a wine that became popular because of its semi-sweet taste. During the 1860s Cincinnati's wine industry flourished and it was known as the nation's "wine capital". Cincinnati's wine industry is celebrated each year when it hosts the Cincinnati International Wine Festival.
10. What do the Ohio cities of Coshocton, Canal Winchester and Chillicothe have in common?

Answer: They were all located along the Ohio and Erie Canal

The Ohio and Erie Canal connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River on Ohio's southern border at Portsmouth. The canal operated from 1827-1861. Many canal towns were founded or grew because of the economic boost the canal provided. Coshocton, Canal Winchester and Chillicothe all benefitted from being located near the canal.
