Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What local term is used to refer to the Okinawan language (Naha dialect)?

Answer: Uchinaguchi

The Okinawan languages or 'hogens' (there are many) vary from island to island and by locality. 'Uchinanchu' refers to an Okinawan person, 'Mensoore' means 'welcome', 'Myaku-dzutzu' is a self-describing term for the language of Miyako Island, about 300km southwest of Okinawa.
2. The Sakishima Islands refer to what two island groups in Okinawa?

Answer: Miyako and Yaeyama

3. Which is *NOT* a music band from Okinawa?

Answer: Buwhal

4. In the Battle of Okinawa, on what date did US ground forces land on the main island of Okinawa?

Answer: April 1, 1945

On March 23, US forces began heavy air raids on Okinawa. March 26 saw the landing of US troops on the Kerama Islands, next to the main island. On April 1, 1945 US forces landed without resistance on the shores from Yomitan to Chatan. April 16, 1945 was a particularly heated battle in which war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed.
5. In the three-month long Battle of Okinawa approximately how many civilians were killed?

Answer: 130,000

About 14,000 American {soldiers;} 70,000 Japanese {soldiers;} and 130,000 to 140,000 Okinawan civilians were killed during the Battle of Okinawa. Truly horrible when civilian casualties nearly double that of all military casualties on both sides. The high civilian casualty rate was a result of the American 'Typhoon of Steel' which rained down about 2,360,000 shells from ground and sea, as well as Japanese soldiers' actions which ranged from turning civilians out of the safety of caves and confiscating their food to systematically executing large groups of Okinawans to prevent them from becomming foreign spies.
6. Of the approximately 160 islands in Okinawa, how many are inhabited by people?

Answer: 48

7. Which major city is *NOT* within 1500 miles of Naha, the capital city of Okinawa?

He placed his father, Sho Shi-sho, on the throne later succeeding him as the second king of the first Sho Dynasty.

Answer: three

The name, 'sanshin', literally means three strings.
12. After the sanshin was adopted by Japan, the instrument as well as the name was slightly modified so that now there are several distinctive differences between the two. Which of the following is a characteristic found on the Okinawan sanshin, but not on the Japanese shamisen?

Answer: snake-skin covered body

The Japanese shamisen is covered with cat or dog skin, while the sanshin uses Burmese python skin. The sanshin's neck is actually shorter than then the shamisen, and both of them have three strings.
13. In what year did the Satsuma invade what is now Okinawa?

Answer: 1609

Satsuma invaded in March of 1609 with far superior military technology and 3000 soldiers veteraned in the Age of Civil Wars in Japan. The Ryukyu Kingdom, a peaceful trading nation never had a chance at defending itself.
14. Shisa or Shishi are carved lions that can be found throughout Okinawa. Where would you most likely find one?

Answer: at an entranceway

Shishi are used as protection against evil and calamity. They are usually placed at entrances to villages or houses, and sometimes on rooftops as well. Generally, they will be found in pairs, one with the mouth opened, the other with it closed.
15. If you are performing Eisa, what might you be banging on?

Answer: a taiko

Eisa is a term used to refer to the Okinawan style of Taiko or drum dancing. This style is completely different than the Japanese style which uses mounted drums and two drumsticks or bachi. Okinawan taiko uses only one bachi, and the drums are carried by the performers.

A taiko is a drum. A kuicha is a traditional dance. The Pantu is a local mythological creature from the island of Miyako. A Noro is a traditional shamanistic preistess - I wouldn't recommend hitting her with a stick.
