Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What body of water lies to the north of the Olympic Peninsula?

Answer: The Strait of Juan de Fuca

The Strait of Juan de Fuca separates the United States from Canada for about 100 miles. It connects the Pacific Ocean with Puget Sound. Cruise ships leaving from Seattle travel the strait to reach the ocean.
2. What is the tallest mountain on the Olympic Peninsula that can be seen from Hurricane Ridge?

Answer: Mount Olympus

Greece is not the only country with a "Mount Olympus"! Mount Olympus of Washington state is 7980 ft. in elevation and is the central feature of the Olympic National Park.
3. What two lakes were drained when their dams on the Elwha River were removed?

Answer: Lake Aldwell and Lake Mills

The dam removal project on the Elwha River is one of the largest in U.S. history. The Elwha River restoration benefits both land and aquatic animals, as well as plant life and the local tribal community.
4. What mountain range changes the weather on the Olympic Peninsula?

Answer: The Olympic Mountains

Temperate rainforests are found on the west side of the mountains. The mountains stop water-carrying weather patterns from the Pacific Ocean, which results in the area east of the mountains being much dryer and almost desert-like in rainfall amounts.
5. Why were the dams on the Elwha River removed?

Answer: To allow salmon to travel unimpeded to spawn

The lakes formed by the dams had water temperatures about 16 degrees Celsius higher than the headwaters of the river. Salmon "like" colder water.
6. Which of the following are not potential dangers for hikers in the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula?

Answer: Olympic marmots

Mountain goats may attack hikers! Giardia can be avoided by boiling all water thoroughly when hiking (for some people, purifying tablets are not enough). Avalanches and rockslides often happen on mountains.
7. What are nurse logs?

Answer: Decaying logs from which new trees are growing

Nurse logs are commonly seen in rainforests. Nurse logs benefit new seedlings in many ways - including disease prevention!
8. What canal is also a fjord?

Answer: Hood Canal

The Hood Canal is a fjord carved out by glacial movement long ago. It is not a man-made canal but is a natural waterway.
9. What large, Canadian island is across the waterway to the north of the Olympic Peninsula?

Answer: Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is also a marvelous place to visit. The island is named after Royal Navy Captain George Vancouver who explored the area in the late 1700s.
10. What statement is true about waterfalls and the Olympic Peninsula?

Answer: There is a Waterfall Trail which guides people to easily accessible waterfalls all around the peninsula

There are many waterfalls on the Olympic Peninsula and quite a few are easily accessible to the casual traveler. There is at least one waterfall that is wheelchair accessible!
