Question 1 of 10
1. My first stop at "Uncle Sam's" expense was a small technical college at the base of the Rocky Mountains, more commonly called the United States Air Force Academy. This prestigious institution lies just north of which city? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. My next stop on "Uncle Sam's" America tour was America's 7th largest city (2008 figures). Navigating around town was easy using I-10, I-35, and I-37, plus two expressway loops. If you go, make sure you plan to eat at "Mi Tierra", one of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. Can you guess where I was? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Uncle Sam" then arranged for me to take a trip to sunny Florida. While visiting, I was able to catch a professional football game where the home team had a large pirate ship in the stadium. Afterwards, we went over to Ybor City to enjoy some night life. So, where did I go? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. My next stop on "Uncle Sam's" whirlwind tour of America was a smaller city in the southwest. This city is home to Fort Concho (former home of the Buffalo Soldiers), Lake Nasworthy, and Goodfellow Air Force Base. To which city am I referring? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. After leaving the southwest, "Uncle Sam" then sent me over to the east coast. This area was full of military installations, including a major ship yard, an amphibious base, two forts, and an Air Force base. It was also close to the first permanent English settlement in the US. Any guesses where I may have had my apartment? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The next location "Uncle Sam" sent me was a little obscure, so I'll only ask you to name the state. It was a little town toward the middle of the state that was named after American Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter, also known as "The Fighting Gamecock." Some other geographic locations of this state are Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach. Where was I? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. For my next trip, "Uncle Sam" played an interesting trick on me, sending me to a place where you can't make left turns while driving (well some of the time). Jug handle and round-about intersections were all over the place here, as was a famous Turnpike highway, the George Washington Bridge, blueberries, cranberries, and "Tony Soprano." In which state was I sent? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. My next assignment was to Cannon Air Force Base. Cannon is located adjacent to a town started by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1906 and named after the first Christian king of the Franks. This town also claims to have the most number of churches per capita than any other city in the US. When the wind blows just right, you can smell the cattle farms scattered about the area. Do you have any idea what city this is? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "Uncle Sam's" next set of orders for we was to a more sub-tropical location, famous for restaurants such as Fudpucker's Beachside Bar & Grill and Maguire's Irish Pub & Brewery. Many of us know about the Emerald City, but would believe this area is called the Emerald Coast? Where was I sent this time? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Of course, no US Air Force career is complete without some trip to their version of the Navy's "Fightertown USA". This desert region (with average summer highs in excess of 100°F) had its share of visitors, including Mormons, railway workers, gangsters, and the Rat Pack. It is also home to the "Big Shot", the highest thrill ride in the world. Where was I sent for this fun "working vacation"? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first stop at "Uncle Sam's" expense was a small technical college at the base of the Rocky Mountains, more commonly called the United States Air Force Academy. This prestigious institution lies just north of which city?

Answer: Colorado Springs, Colorado

Located between Pueblo and Denver, Colorado Springs boasts a wide range of industry and entertainment. From the cockpit of my glider, I could see Pike's Peak and many other majestic purple mountains to the west and the vast golden plains to the east.

Answer: San Antonio, Texas

Downtown San Antonio is rich in food, shopping, and entertainment, particularly around the River Walk area. Of course, no visit would be complete without a trip to The Alamo.
3. "Uncle Sam" then arranged for me to take a trip to sunny Florida. While visiting, I was able to catch a professional football game where the home team had a large pirate ship in the stadium. Afterwards, we went over to Ybor City to enjoy some night life. So, where did I go?

Answer: Tampa

Tampa is home to MacDill Air Force Base, which has an interesting runway approach since the runway pretty much stops at the water line. Around Tampa are other notable cities, such at St. Petersburg (not the one in Russia) and Clearwater.
4. My next stop on "Uncle Sam's" whirlwind tour of America was a smaller city in the southwest. This city is home to Fort Concho (former home of the Buffalo Soldiers), Lake Nasworthy, and Goodfellow Air Force Base. To which city am I referring?

Answer: San Angelo, Texas

San Angelo is the third largest city in the US that is not within 50 miles of an Interstate highway (behind Brownsville, TX and McAllen, TX). San Angelo finally got a Starbucks, but alas, it was after I left in 2002.
5. After leaving the southwest, "Uncle Sam" then sent me over to the east coast. This area was full of military installations, including a major ship yard, an amphibious base, two forts, and an Air Force base. It was also close to the first permanent English settlement in the US. Any guesses where I may have had my apartment?

Answer: Newport News, Virginia

The area also includes the cities of Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Williamsburg. Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in what would later become the US, was founded in 1607 right up the road from Newport News and Williamsburg.

Answer: South Carolina

I did a temporary duty (TDY) to Shaw Air Force Base which is 10 miles outside of Sumter, South Carolina. As anyone who is an American college sports fan can tell you, the "Gamecocks" is the mascot for the University of South Carolina.

Answer: New Jersey

New Jersey is second in the US in blueberry production and third in cranberries. The George Washington bridge connects New Jersey to New York City and is the world's busiest bridge for vehicular traffic.

Answer: Clovis, New Mexico

Clovis is located in the Llano Estacado region and sits about 10 miles from the Texas border. It is about 80 miles from both Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas. In 2006-7, the Department of Defense Base Realignment and Closures Commission (BRAC) had Cannon AFB on the chopping block, but the continued effort by the people of Clovis convinced the commission to keep the base due to the huge negative economic impact it would have had on the town had the base closed.

Answer: Destin, Florida

Destin claims to have Florida's largest fishing vessel fleet. It is also known for its sandy white beaches. Its neighbor, Ft. Walton Beach, is home to Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field.

Answer: Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is home to Nellis Air Force Base, where the Air Force has it Fighter Weapons School (their equivalent of "Top Gun"). The downtown area, centered around Freemont Street, is home the Golden Nugget and Binion's Horseshoe casinos. Of course, "The Strip" is where all the mega-resorts are located, including Caesar's Palace, The Bellagio, and The Luxor.
