Nuuk is the Inuit name, Godthaab or Godthab the Danish name. Greenland is a Danish colony with some self-government. The population is 56,000. Nuuk has 13,000 inhabitants and is the administrative centre of Greenland since 1950.

A Scottish sailor called Alexander Selkirk lived on Isla Mas a Tierra between 1704-09. The novel Robinson Crusoe is based on his story.

The local population was moved from these islands to make a military air base. It was made a British Overseas Territory in 1965, and has no permanent population. Diego Garcia is the main island, and hence the 'centre', although the territory is administered from London and Victoria, capital of the Seychelles.
