Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I reached my first destination thanks to Mapquest and I'm ready to watch the match, but it sure don't look like the Camp Nou to me. Where in Cornwall, UK have I ended up?

Answer: Barcelona

Barcelona is a small hamlet near Looe in south east Cornwall. The local amateur football team, from the neighbouring village of Pelynt, play their home games in Barcelona and their ground is called the New Camp as a nod to their more famous Spanish namesakes. If you're looking for streets such as La Ramblas in Barcelona UK, you will be disappointed, but on the other hand, Barcelona Spain can't offer views of the stunning Cornish countryside.
2. Off to a city in Texas next, although when I arrive it's not as hot as I expected and the people sure do speak with a strange accent. Uh-oh, right place, wrong location. Which country am I in?

Answer: France

Both France and Texas have a Paris. The capital of France may be better known and slightly larger with a population of over two million compared to about 25,000 in Texas, but this one is an easy mistake to make as both cities have an Eiffel Tower. The difference is the one in France is 324 metres high and was built in the 19th century, while the one in Texas is 20 metres high, was built in 1993 and has a huge red cowboy hat on the top.
3. A long flight now, to Australia, and as we come in to land, I can see the harbour, but no sign of the opera house. I do however see a 60 foot fiddle. Oh no. Right place, wrong location. Where in Canada have I landed?

Answer: Nova Scotia

Sydney, Nova Scotia was founded in 1785 by the British while Sydney, Australia was founded as a penal colony by the British in 1788, so not only is Canadian Sydney older, it can boast the largest fiddle in the world too. It is situated on Cape Breton Island and was the capital of the island until 1820, when the merge with Nova Scotia happened and the capital moved to another "right place, wrong location" candidate, Halifax. Sydney, Australia is still a state capital, to New South Wales, and Sydneysiders will also point out that although their harbour is missing a giant fiddle, it does have a world famous opera house and a world famous bridge.
4. OK, I've bought my ticket and I'm looking forward to trying those fresh peaches. I may even swim in the Atlantic, but on landing I find I will be swimming in the Black Sea. Where am I this time?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia is the peach state in USA, and is also the largest producer of pecans in the world. Georgia the country grows a lot of corn as well as tea and has some excellent vineyards, producing wines that seem to improve year on year. Georgia the state is named after King George II of Great Britain while the country is believed to take its name from the Persian for wolf, literally, Georgia is "land of the wolves".
5. Now we go to visit La Paz, the highest administrative capital in the world, although the flight to Bolivia doesn't take as long as I expected. Wait a minute. Right place, wrong location again. We are in a state capital of which country?

Answer: Mexico

La Paz is the state capital of Baja California Sur and is well worth a visit to look around the whale museum housed there. La Paz, Bolivia meanwhile, is also well worth a visit, especially for The Witches' Market where along with medicinal plants and lotions promising eternal youth, one can also buy dried frogs and dried llama fetuses.
6. Next up, I'm visiting the capital of Western Australia but this plane must be new technology as the flight takes no time at all. First thing I see on arrival is Scone Abbey and Palace, where the monarchs were crowned. Wait a minute! Australian monarchs? Which country am I actually in?

Answer: Scotland

Yep, I flew to Perth, but Perth Scotland, not Perth Australia. While I should be sipping Swan Valley wine and browsing the Fremantle Markets, basking in 40 degrees Celsius heat, I am instead, sipping Tullibardine single malt, before going to watch St. Johnstone play football in temperatures of five degrees Celsius.
7. My wife wants to go shopping so we are off to a city which until 2004 had the largest shopping mall in the world, but when we arrive, we find to our surprise that we are in London (UK, not Ontario). Which right place but wrong location has our chauffeur brought us to?

Answer: Edmonton

Edmonton is a suburb of London, neighbouring the better known area of Tottenham. It was also the home town of Hudson's Bay Company director, Sir James Winter Lake, and the company's trading outpost in Alberta, Canada (at that time part of what was known as Rupert's Land) was named after his home town, growing far beyond a trading outpost to become the provincial capital.
8. Once again, right place, wrong location as I've gone to Liverpool for a Beatles tour. The problem is, I'm not on Merseyside, I'm in which Australian state?

Answer: New South Wales

Liverpool, Merseyside has a huge history and really can't be done in a week if a visitor wants to take in the music scene, football history, shipping history and its role in the Industrial Revolution and the slave trade not to mention the variety of shopping experiences available. Liverpool NSW is named after the UK city and has a history as an agricultural centre.

It is a thriving suburb of Sydney, close to Georges River, a main tributary of Botany Bay.
9. I think I'm just going to stay close to home now and visit the UK town with the largest parish church in England. So why do I see a sign commemorating a certain famous tea party? Which American city have I somehow arrived in?

Answer: Boston

The church in Boston, Lincolnshire can be seen from miles away due to the flat landscape for which the county is so well known. Boston is a small port on the North Sea, used mainly by fishing trawlers, in contrast to the city in Massachusetts which is named after it.

The American port was founded in 1630 by Puritan settlers, many of whom were from Lincolnshire; it was the site of the Boston Tea Party which led to the American War of Independence (1775-1783).
10. Well, this is exciting. I'm off to western France to see the port that is famous for the naval academy and building the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle". You guessed it! Right place, wrong location. I'm near the Polish border in Belarus. Which city am I in?

Answer: Brest

There are indeed two Brests in Europe, and it would seem that the Belarusian Brest is much bigger than the French Brest at approximately 145 square kilometres versus 50 square kilometres. While the French Brest is, as mentioned, a noted naval city, the Belarusian Brest has quite a history too.

It has over the years been part of Poland, Lithuania, Russia (including Soviet Union) and Nazi Germany before Belarus declared independence in 1991. The Brests were twinned in 2012.
