Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Port wine by definition can only originate in Portugal. In what part of Portugal are the grapes that are used in Port wine grown?

Answer: In the Douro Valley east and north of Porto

The Douro Valley, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters, is ideal for growing the wine grapes needed for Port. The Douro river is an irrigation source and splits Porto. The grapes are not that different from other grapes used in wines; the difference is that Port wine is wine with a distillation spirit added, not unlike brandy which fortifies and sweetens the wine as well as increases the alcohol content. Porto, as a city, has its economy firmly grounded in Port exports but other agricultural exports include almonds and olives which thrive in this climate as well as the export of cork. However while Port has to come from Portugal, cork is also grown in Argentina, Australia and Spain.

2. Heading east from Portugal, we arrive in Spain and head for the city of Valencia. On which body of water is it located?

Answer: Mediterranean Sea

Valencia is located on Spain's eastern coast, placing it well away from the three incorrect options listed. Among the cities of Spain, Valencia is the third largest, with only the capital, Madrid, and Barcelona being larger. The city was founded by the Romans, in 138 BC, and its long history makes it a popular tourist destination. Parts of the cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mary, date from the thirteenth century.

3. We're going to northern Spain to enjoy a day at the beaches and then wind down at the nearby award-winning Mugaritz restaurant. Which city in the Basque Autonomous Community, also known as Donostia, are we visiting?

Answer: San Sebastian

San Sebastián, also known as 'The Pearl of the Cantabrian Sea', has been hugely popular among tourists not only for its renowned beaches but also for its numerous jazz and film festivals. The award-winning Mugaritz restaurant was opened in 1998 and awarded its second Michelin star in 2005. Donostia is simply the Basque form of Saint Sebastian, and in 2016 there were approximately 750,000 native speakers of the Basque language in the Basque regions of Spain and France.

4. Known as La Ville Rose, meaning The Pink City, and for being the main location of Europe's aerospace industry, which of these cities is situated on the River Garonne in southern France?

Answer: Toulouse

Toulouse is the capital city of the Haute-Garonne department, and is among France's largest cities. It is where the supersonic aircraft, Concorde, was developed in the 1960s and 1970s, along with Filton, near Bristol, in the UK. Rather older is the University of Toulouse, which dates from 1229, making it one of Europe's oldest. The city's nickname comes from the colour of the bricks used in the construction of many of the buildings.

5. The Mont Blanc massif largely between France and Italy has a range of other challenging peaks to climb than just Mont Blanc itself. Which of these mountains is *NOT* one we could possibly visit there?

Answer: Signal de Botrange

Signal de Botrange is the highest point in Belgium at a modest 694m, whereas the Mont Blanc massif exists largely in France and Italy with a small portion in Switzerland. In comparison, Mont Maudit, Grandes Jorasses and Aiguille Verte all tower over 4,000m. Mont Maudit in particular seems daunting - its name stands for 'Cursed Mountain' and in 2012 at least nine climbers died there in a freak avalanche that appeared without warning. Aiguille Verte is known as the 'Green Needle' and the Grandes Jorasses contain one of the great north faces of the Alps known for their steepness and difficulty to climb.

6. Team Red has drifted into southern Italy, most notably Naples, where they are fortunate to sample the famous Neapolitan pizza, which is also known by which of the following names?

Answer: Margherita

Naples is generally accepted as the place where pizza was created. Initially this was seen as a meal for peasant folk but, thanks to the work of Ferdinand IV, it soon found its way into Italy's upper classes. The Margherita (Neapolitan) pizza, named in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy, holds pride of place. So much so that, to be considered genuine, the ingredients that go toward its creation are now marked by law and the process to create it has been included in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. So what does go into making the classic Margherita pizza? Wheat flour and it must be type "00", natural mineral water, peeled Roma tomatoes or fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, sea salt and extra virgin olive oil.

7. In Milan, in the north of Italy, an invitation was extended to Team Red to watch a soccer match and it was gratefully accepted. During the half time break their host bragged that Milan was the first city in Europe to be the home of two European Cup/Champions League winning teams. Is this true or false?

Answer: True

When it comes to soccer Italians are amongst the most passionate and enthusiastic participants on the planet. In excess of 4.3 million people participate and it is not difficult to understand why the Italian national team is rated one of the best in the world.

With this in mind, it is little wonder then that Associazione Calcio Milan, better known as A.C. Milan and Football Club Internazionale Milano, colloquially known as Inter Milan have been extremely successful as local teams playing on the world stage. A.C. Milan, formed in 1899, by 2018 won three Intercontinental Cups, one FIFA Club World Cup and seven European Cup/Champions League titles. Inter, founded 1908, to the same time won three UEFA Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup. They have won the Champions League three times.

With an Italian sounding name, pollucci19 was the natural choice to write this question.
8. We've left Italy and we're heading to a country on the Balkan Peninsula, whose capital is near the end of the alphabet. What country surrounds Bosnia and Herzegovina on the north and west, and has a border on the Adriatic Sea?

Answer: Croatia

Croatia is a geographically diverse country enjoying both a long coastline and the Dinaric Alps to the east. The largest river in Croatia is the Sava, which rises in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Croatian rivers drain into the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. Its climate is considered both Mediterranean and Continental and the mountains on the Velebit range enjoy winter snow.

9. As Team Red makes their approach to their next destination, Greece, they notice that it has many islands and is touched by a number of seas. Which of the following is *NOT* one of those?

Answer: Caspian

Greece's eastern border is surrounded by the Aegean Sea while the Libyan and Cretan Seas provide its southern border. To the west is Italy and, here, Greece is separated from it by the Ionian Sea. Its southern most tip touches the Mediterranean Sea. The number of islands attributed to Greece will vary upon which definition of "island" is used, and numbers will range from between 1,200 to 6,000. Thanks to all these islands Greece has the largest coastline in the Mediterranean Basin and the eleventh largest in the world.

10. The best known Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul, but Greece has its own church with the same name. In which major city, located in the northern part of the country, would you be able to see it?

Answer: Thessaloniki

In English, Hagia Sophia means 'Holy Wisdom', so it's not surprising that there should be more than one church of that name. The one in Thessaloniki, which is Greece's second largest city after Athens, dates from the eighth century. Over the years the building has been a cathedral and a mosque, becoming a church in 1912. It is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
