Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Skocjan Cave System in southern Slovenia was given which status in 1986?

Answer: UNESCO World Heritage Site

Now known as The Skocjan Caves Regional Park, this natural underground wonder was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. One of the largest cave systems in the world, humans have known about and used this cave system for at least 3,000 years, and possibly much longer. Take a sweater with you when you visit the cave as it maintains a steady temperature of 53°F (12°C).

These caves are unique and are home to one of the largest underground chambers known to man, as well as one of the largest known underground rivers.
2. One of the loveliest places to visit in Slovenia is Lake Bohinj, a wonderful example of which type of lake?

Answer: Glacial lake

Pristine Lake Bohinj is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia. It is nestled between the Bohinj Mountains. This long, slender lake is about 150 ft. (45m) deep. It is a popular destination for anglers and is known for its many types of fish. The surrounding mountains provide a breathtaking view.
3. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Slovenia is which mansion known for its beautiful sculptures?

Answer: Tivoli Castle

Located in Tivoli Park, Tivoli Castle is a historic mansion in the city of Ljubljana. In front of this lovely building is a fountain that is a replica of the one built in 1870. Behind that are four cast iron dogs, the work of Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn. Tivoli Park is a must see destination if you travel to Slovenia, it has botanical gardens, thousands of birds, playgrounds, museums, etc.
4. The Nadiza River ends its journey as part of which great European River?

Answer: Danube

The beautiful Nadiza Springe emerges from a rock wall in the Julian Alps. It is the first source of the Sava Dolinka River, which in turn is a tributary of the great Danube River. The water emerges directly from a fissure in the rocks as opposed to coming from a cascade that falls over a rock ledge.

The water is crystal clear and very cold. There are those who believe it has healing powers.
5. Predjama Castle in southern Slovenia is the original Dracula's Castle.

Answer: False

Predjama Castle is a magnificent castle built within a cave. Originally constructed around 1274, its location provided it with ingenious offensive and defensive positioning. In the 15th century, part of the castle was destroyed in a heated battle between the robber-baron who lived there and Roman soldiers who were attempting to capture him.

The castle was repaired/rebuilt; those repairs lasted until an earthquake in 1511 caused major damage again. The cave had a natural shaft that was used to easily exit the castle without being seen and was used to bring in supplies or to escape.

While Predjama Castle has the reputation of being one of the most haunted locations in Slovenia and many locals avoid it altogether, it has never been associated as Dracula's Castle.
6. While traveling in Slovenia, especially in rural areas, you are likely to see which breed of iron gray dog which is considered a Slovenian natural treasure?

Answer: Krasevec

The Krasevec, also called the Karst shepherd, has been being bred in Slovenia for over 500 years. They were bred to herd sheep in the Karst, the rocky landscape that covers much of Slovenia. Sheep have been an important part of Slovenia for centuries as they are able to handle the stony terrain. Krasevecs were bred to have sure feet, a double coat of fur to keep them warm, and a sense of fearlessness that helps them keep the sheep from wandering away.

The Karst of Slovenia has been populated for centuries despite the difficulty this landscape of towers, potholes, and fissures causes.
7. The Charterhouse of Pleterje is a breathtaking house of worship associated with which religion?

Answer: Roman Catholicism

Constructed around 1407, The Pleterje Monastery, alternately known as the Charterhouse of Pleterje, is a Catholic monastery and church occupied by Carthusian monks. Today, this set of walled religious buildings are a mixture of construction style throughout many centuries. If you like to visit, an appointment must be made with the monastery porter.

As these monks live a life of strict reclusion, silence and peace, only certain areas can be toured. A visit here should be for the beautiful architecture as opposed to the idea of meeting the monks.

This is unlikely to happen.
8. During your travels in Slovenia, you are bound to see a building like the one in this picture. Called kozolecs, what is their purpose?

Answer: They are haylofts.

The kozolec is a free standing hay or grain loft. It is only found in Slovenia. It was originally used for storing grain or other foodstuffs, but today is usually just used for hay. The technology of today has made these buildings outdated, but they are still found all over the country and are a source of ethnic and cultural pride. Most of them are in very good shape and are often used, even to a much lesser degree than at one time in the past.

These buildings are often rather elaborate and no two are alike.
9. Why is the small city of Koper one of the most important cities in Slovenia?

Answer: It is home to the largest port in the country.

Slovenia has only 29 miles (47kilometers) of coastline, otherwise it is landlocked. Koper is home to many things including the largest port in the country. Sitting on the Adriatic Sea, it is vitally important for import/export business. An overnight stay in this city will allow you to visit locations such as the Praetorian Palace and the Cathedral of Assumption, all within walking distance of many fine cafes and small motels.
10. Which fruit crop is so very important to Slovenia, that every summer in the area of Goriska Brda there is a large outdoor festival in commemoration of which fruit?

Answer: Cherries

In the summer months after the cherry crop has ripened, the southern area of Slovenia known as Gorsika Brda is bustling to bring in the crop from the trees, keep them preserved and have large celebrations for the fruit that is so important to them. There is plenty of cherry wine, cherry desserts and bushels of fresh cherries being sold on the sidewalks. Slovenian cherries come in many shapes and colors, from pink to black. Slovenia is widely accepted to grow some of the very finest cherries in the world.

This is a festival worth going to. It provides the tourist with an inside look at Slovenian culture including music and dance as well as offering some of the fine dining of this country.
