Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A Caribbean island which composes the principal territory for two independent nations. One is the only independent French speaking country in the Caribbean.

Answer: Hispaniola

Haiti and the Dominican Republic are the occupants of Hispaniola. Haiti achieved independence from France in 1804 and The Dominican Republic from Spain in 1821 and from Haiti in 1844. Haiti, the smaller, French speaking part was the home of Toussaint L'Ouverture the liberation hero who lead the Haitian slaves in revolution against the French.
2. A South American island, famed for its fires, shared by Chile and Argentina.

Answer: Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) was named in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan when he sailed through the eponymous strait that separates the island from the rest of South America. The diarist of the voyage, Antonio Pigafetta, records that the fires were those of the indigenous population not volcanic activity.
3. An island of the East Indies shared by a newly independent state and the country with the world's largest Islamic population. Formerly shared by Netherlands and Portugal.

Answer: Timor

After a valiant struggle the former Portuguese colony of East Timor gained independence in 2002, after a period of UN governance. Relationship with the rest of the island, which is part of Indonesia, are still strained following Indonesian occupation from 1975 to 2000
4. We stay in the region for a further island formerly shared by European colonial powers, this time Netherlands and Germany (later replaced by Australia). Answer: Cyprus

This could also be seen as a three way split as a small part of Cyprus is also British sovereign territory where the military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are located

Answer: St Maarten/St Martin

Unlike their French neighbours, the Dutch side doesn't use the Euro and is probably one of the last places in the world where the guilder is legal tender.

The subject of a treaty in 1902 and a lease in perpetuity in 1934, the Guantanamo US Naval base is one of the world's stranger geopolitical anomalies!
