Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This stop on our tour is the home of the Moai monoliths, which is actually part of Chile. Where in the South Pacific are we?

Answer: Easter Island

Also known as Rapa Nui, Easter Island is over three thousand, five hundred miles from the nearest continent. Typically warm, it's a nice spot for a vacation and it's the only place to see the ancient Moai statues gaze out to sea. Rapa Nui National Park, the home of over eight hundred Moai statues, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

While a fair bit of the local economy revolves around fishing, a good bit of money comes in from tourists looking to visit somewhere remote and unique.

This is certainly the place. Have you met the giant stone men?
2. Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake are some of the more stunning sites on this location found to the south of Australia. What's this the name of this island?

Answer: Tasmania

Part of Australia, Tasmania is an island known for its natural beauty. With a large portion of the island covered by protected wilderness, it's the perfect place to go to get in touch with nature. The capital city of Hobart is in the south of the island making it one of the most southerly capital cities in the world. Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake are particularly noteworthy as they are some of the most-visited regions of Tasmania. Surprisingly, Tasmania is also home to some of Australia's only rainforests.
3. Spend this leg of the journey relaxing on the Playa Azul. The city of Varadero is found on the northern coast of which Caribbean Island?

Answer: Cuba

Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and the sixteenth-largest in the world. Its capital, Havana, lies about one hundred fifty kilometers west of the resort area of Varadero in the Matanzas province on the island's northern coast. Here, on the lengthy Hicacos Peninsula, visitors seeking the warm sun can relax on the white sand beaches of Playa Azul, a long stretch of coastline groomed to perfection by the local resorts. Varadero was once the home of many American mansions (including the residence of Al Capone) before the Cuban Revolution.

In the late 1990s and 2000s, the region grew and became one of the top vacation spots in Central America.
4. Heading into the Atlantic, where are we if we're on the largest of the Canary Islands?

Answer: Tenerife

About one hundred kilometers off the west coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are part of Spain's government. The largest island of the seven in the chain is Tenerife, where most of its inhabitants reside. Because of its proximity to the Equator, Tenerife maintains warm temperatures year-round and is a unique tourist destination. Teide, Spain's largest mountain, is found on the island and it's one of the world's largest volcanoes.

It also acts as one of the island's UNESCO Heritage Sites. The capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a cultural and economic hub for the archipelago and its largest city.
5. One of the more industrialized islands on our journey, what island is home to the structure depicted?

Answer: Taiwan

What became Taiwan's largest building in 2004, Taipei 101 was built in the city of Taipei, Taiwan's capital. Off the east coast of Asia, Taiwan is thirty-ninth-largest island in the world and it's designated as part of China. Known for its industrial significance in the world, Taiwan is also a beautiful locale with a tropical climate.

Although at risk of numerous earthquakes due to its position in the middle of two different plates, Taiwan has majestic mountain ranges a bit deeper in from the coast.
6. Known for its potato fields and "Anne of Green Gables", what Canadian island is also the country's smallest province?

Answer: Prince Edward Island

The seventh province to join following Canada's Confederation, Prince Edward Island joined the country in 1873 and contains the lowest population of all of the Canadian provinces, mostly due to its small size. The twenty-third-largest island in Canada, P.E.I. is home to rich soils perfect for potato farming, rolling hillsides, long sandy beaches, and (most famously) "Anne of Green Gables", a children's book character created by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The capital city of P.E.I. is Charlottetown and the island is eight miles from New Brunswick; the two are connected by the thirteen-kilometer-long Confederation Bridge.
7. Stopping in Africa, visitors to this island nation can spot lemurs or visit the city of Antananarivo. Where would this be?

Answer: Madagascar

Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island and Africa's biggest in terms of area. Home to millions, Madagascar is one of the most interesting African countries in terms of its ecosystems. One of the only countries to contain lemurs, the majority of the world's chameleons, and several hundred unique birds, Madagascar's fauna is kept removed from the rest of Africa because of its remoteness.

The capital city of Madagascar is Antananarivo and it's found in the center of the island while Nosy Be, an island off the northern coast of Madagascar, is the biggest tourist spot of the country.
8. Home to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, which of the major Japanese islands is the largest?

Answer: Honshu

The island of Honshu is the world's seventh-largest island and it is home to most of the country of Japan holding over 100,000,000 citizens on its land. Honshu is home to the metropolis of Tokyo and its surrounding cities, the majestic Mt. Fuji, and much of the country's primary industries. Due to its position on the Ring of Fire, Honshu is a location notorious for its seismic activity. Aside from active volcanoes, Japan is at risk of tsunamis and earthquakes. Japan's technological advances, high life expectancy rate, and staggeringly high population make it one of the world's superpowers, but behind the concrete jungles of it major cities lies a serene landscape of deep cultural roots and natural beauty.
9. The largest island in Greece, what is the name of the location home to the city of Heraklion and the site of Knossos?

Answer: Crete

The fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is number eighty-nine worldwide in terms of size. Because of its weather, the beautiful beaches, and historical sites, Crete is popular with tourists and archaeologists alike. The island's capital, Heraklion, is the fourth-largest city in all of Greece and contains several Venetian and Ottoman influences characteristic of the country's past rulings.

The nearby ruins of Knossos were once a hub for Europe's oldest civilization, and restoration efforts are continuous.
10. Part of Indonesia, which island known for its tourism holds the majority of the country's Hinduism followers?

Answer: Bali

Once considered the tourist spot no one would ever find, Bali's visitor numbers exploded, especially after its being featured in the movie "Eat. Pray. Love." in 2010. A location with lush, coastal resorts, Hindu temples of all sizes, and beautiful rolling fields, Bali is one of the country's seventeen thousand different islands. Bali is #108 in size in the world though it's Indonesia's fourteenth-largest. Located relatively close to the Equator, Bali has beautiful weather, but is subject to monsoons hitting Oceania. Bali is also home to a number of active volcanoes.
