Surrey, Home of the Stockbroker Belt Quiz

Surrey, so close to London, but protected from being a concrete jungle by the Green Belt. Most importantly it appears no-one has written a quiz about it, until now.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Surrey town has commemorated H. G. Wells having lived there, with a sculpture of a Martian?

Answer: Woking

"The Woking Martian sculpture was created by artist Michael Condron and unveiled in April 1998. It consists of three elements: the Martian Fighting Machine, the Martian Cylinder and the Bacteria." ~ http://www.cix.co.uk/~sjbradshaw/martian/
The sculpture is certainly different from that found in most town centres.
2. As a consequence of World War 1, a rather famous race was uprooted from its normal venue and held in Surrey, although under a different name to normal. What was this race?

Answer: Grand National

The Grand National was run at Gatwick in 1916, 1917 and 1918 as the War Office had taken over Aintree racecourse. It was named "The Racecourse Association Steeplechase" in 1916 and "The War Steeplechase" in the subsequent two years. These are the only three years to date that the race has been held at a venue other than Aintree. For those of you who know that Gatwick is now in Sussex, it was in Surrey until 1972.
3. The county of Surrey has many hills and views. But what is the highest point in Surrey?

Answer: Leith Hill

Leith Hill is 968 feet above sea level at its peak, while nearby Box Hill is only 564 feet. Colley Hill is around 725 feet high. All of these are part of the North Downs in Surrey. Ditchling Beacon is in Sussex and stands 813 feet above sea level.
4. Which of the following is not a local authority within Surrey?

Answer: Rushmoor Borough Council

Rushmoor Borough is over the border in Hampshire. Surrey consists of eleven district and borough councils. A full listing may be found at http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/
5. The 1972 Local Government Reform Act altered, amongst other things, the county boundary between Surrey and Sussex. Which two towns and/or villages were moved from Surrey to Sussex, but raised such a clamour that a new act was passed to transfer them back to Surrey?

Answer: Horley and Charlwood

The 'Charlwood and Horley Act 1974' was the result. The 1972 act replaced the previous forms of local government with a two-tier system of counties and districts across England and Wales. More information can be found at http://www.answers.com/topic/local-government-act-1972
Crawley and East Grinstead were already in Sussex, the other places listed were then, and are now in Surrey.
6. In which town will you find Mount Browne, the headquarters of Surrey Police?

Answer: Guildford

"The 19th-century, red-bricked building that is the heart of the Surrey Police Headquarters complex was originally bought in 1891 by George John Browne, the Third Marquis of Sligo." from the History of Mount Browne, HQ. http://www.surrey.police.uk/aboutus_history_item.asp?artid=805
As Guildford is the county town of Surrey it seems reasonable to have the Police Headquarters there.
7. In the nineteenth century railways were built throughout Surrey, making travel to and from London much more feasible. The birth of commuting! But just like the roads of today, the railways had their own congestion problems. The Quarry Line was built to bypass bottlenecks in which town?

Answer: Redhill

The Quarry Line runs from Stoats Nest Junction, just south of Purley and rejoins the main line to the north of Earlswood station. In the early days of railways, when two companies ran trains on the same route it was common to put a slow train to run just ahead of your competitors express trains. Fast trains on the London to Brighton line are still frequently routed via the Quarry line to avoid the hold ups at Redhill. Still more information (if desired) can be found at http://www.ludgatecircus.com/stoats_nest_junction.htm
8. Where in Surrey was the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences based from 1949 - 1995?

Answer: Wormley

Prior to 1949 it was known as the National Institute of Oceanography. In 1995 in became part of the National Oceanographic Library at Southampton University.
9. English horse racing has five annual races, known as "classics". The Derby, is run at Epsom in Surrey. Which of the remaining four is also normally held in Surrey?

Answer: The Oaks

The Oaks is also run at Epsom. The 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas are run at Newmarket in Suffolk, while the St. Leger is run at Doncaster in Yorkshire.
10. Guildford, despite having an Anglican Cathedral remains a town not a city. The Cathedral itself is on a hill to the west of the town. To which of the following is it dedicated?

Answer: The Holy Spirit

Its full name is the Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit. Building work started in 1936 and was finally completed in 1961. The cathedral ia built of bricks made from the clay of the hill on which it stands.
