Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sussex is a coastal county. Which body of water laps the coast of Sussex?

Answer: English Channel

The English Channel keeps the French away from us, or possibly the other way around. The Baltic is first left past Denmark, for the Bay of Biscay turn right, then left at Cherbourg and to reach the Mediterranean, change at Gibraltar.
2. Which of the following counties does not border Sussex?

Answer: Berkshire

Surrey is to the north, Hampshire to the west and Kent to the east. Berkshire is the other side of Surrey.
3. Here is a list of English cities, only one of which is in Sussex. The question of course is - which?

Answer: Brighton and Hove

Brighton and Hove became a city by Royal Proclamation in 2000 as part of the millennium celebrations. Of the others, Canterbury is in Kent, Southampton is in Hampshire, both counties neighbouring Sussex, whilst Ely is far away in Cambridgeshire.
4. Which long distance footpath runs through Sussex starting at Eastbourne?

Answer: South Downs Way

The South Downs Way runs from Eastbourne on the Sussex coast, across the width of the county and on into Hampshire as far as Winchester. The North Downs Way runs from Dover through Kent and Surrey as far as the Hampshire border. The remaining two are imaginary.
5. Which London Airport lies within the borders of Sussex?

Answer: London Gatwick

Until the boundary changes of 1974, Gatwick was in Surrey. The changes were part of the Local Government Reform Act of 1972 which took effect on 1st April 1974. They found it easier to move the county boundary than the airport.
6. Each year veteran cars, (that is those built before 1905), take part in the "London to Brighton" car run. Where does the run officially finish?

Answer: Brighton

It is called the London to Brighton run for a reason.
Many of the cars fail to finish the course, but this is hardly surprising considering their age. In most years there is a breakfast halt in Crawley High Street, which provides an excellent opportunity to see and photograph the cars.
7. For some Royal Ascot is the most important horse racing meeting of the year. For others it's the Derby. Here in Sussex we have a "Glorious" time. But at which racecourse?

Answer: Goodwood

Glorious Goodwood takes place at the height of summer. Last time I went it was certainly glorious for me, as I beat the bookies! Gatwick hasn't had a racecourse since a rather large airport was built on it and Pevensey doesn't have a racecourse at all. Glorious Brighton just doesn't sound right to me.
8. Which rather famous battle occurred in the east of Sussex in the eleventh century?

Answer: Battle of Hastings

Back in 1066, England versus the Normans. King Harold was the runner up and William of Normandy came last but one. You can find a good analysis at http://www.battle1066.com/
The Battle of Britain took place in the skies above Sussex, as well as Kent, Surrey and other counties, but it happened in the twentieth century. The Battle of Stamford Bridge was also in 1066 but in the north of England, a sort of warm up for Harold, while Bannockburn was fought in Scotland in 1314.
9. From which of these London railway stations would you not be able to take a direct train to Brighton?

Answer: Liverpool Street

From Liverpool Street you can get trains to East Anglia, but nothing to the south, west, or north of England. It would take a massive amount of engineering and make no sense to change that, so I confidently expect it to become government policy any day soon. At the time of writing the other three stations each had four trains an hour to Brighton during the day outside of peak times.
10. At the 1983 General Election, of how many parliamentary constituencies did Sussex consist?

Answer: Fifteen

All fifteen returned Conservatives in 1983. Here is the list of all fifteen parliamentary constituencies in 1983: Arundel, 'Bexhill and Battle', Brighton Kemptown, Brighton Pavilion, Chichester, Crawley, 'Hastings and Rye', Horsham, Hove, Lewes, Shoreham, Sussex Mid, Wealden and Worthing. Did you miss any?
