Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What state, named after the largest and second longest river in the world, is home to the highest mountain in Brazil?

Answer: Amazonas

Amazonas is the largest Brazilian state by area, bigger than France, Spain, Switzerland and Greece combined. Pico da Neblina (Fog Peak), the highest mountain in Brazil (2993m or 9822 ft), is located in the north of the state, close to the Brazil-Venezuela border.
2. This state has on its border with Argentina the Iguaçu Falls, one of the biggest in the world, and on its border with Paraguay the Itaipu Dam, the second largest hydroelectric dam in the world. What state is this?

Answer: Paraná

Paraná, with fellow states Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, forms the southern region of Brazil. The state is named after the Paraná River, where the Itaipu Dam is located.
3. This is the most central state of Brazil and in the last century had territory removed from it twice: in 1960 it gave territory for the creation of federal district and in 1988 the northern part was separated and formed another state. What state is this?

Answer: Goiás

Goiás is named after a native tribe named "Goyazes" that inhabited the region. The "Goyazes" suddenly disappeared without a trace after the arrival of the first settlers in the region. There is currently a debate among historians about whether or not they existed.
4. This state's capital is the second largest city in Brazil and was the capital of the country for nearly two hundred years. It is famous for the carnival and the statue of Christ the Redeemer on the Corcovado. What state is this?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is the second largest and second most populated city in Brazil (2011) and is also famous for the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the Corcovado and the Maracana stadium.
5. These two states were separated in 1977. These are the only two states in Brazil where the Pantanal, a tropical wetland, can be found. What are these states?

Answer: Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul

Mato Grosso do Sul (literally "Thick Bush of the South") was created in 1977 because the area of the state of Mato Grosso (literally means "Thick Bush") was too large to be ruled by one state government. Mato Grosso was the second largest state of Brazil at that time and today is the third largest.
6. The Pampas, a fertile South American lowlands extend through Argentina, Uruguay and this state in Brazil - the southernmost one. What is it?

Rio Grande do Sul is the state where The War of the Ragamuffins (Portuguese: Guerra dos Farrapos) took place. It is the longest and second bloodiest civil war in Brazilian history.
7. What are the two Brazilian states that have capital cities with the same name as their respective states?

Answer: São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

8. What state in the north region of Brazil is the second largest state in Brazil and borders Guyana and Suriname?

Answer: Pará

Pará comes from the Tupi-Guarani (an indigenous language) meaning river. The only star in the northern part of the Brazilian flag represents this state because at the time of the independence, Belém (the state's capital) was the only state capital above the Equator.
9. This state is the western extreme of Brazil and was bought in 1903 from Bolivia. Its name also represents a unit of area, but the origin comes from a misspelling of the name of a local river. What state is this?

Answer: Acre

Acre was bought from Bolivia in 1903 after two revolts led by local Brazilians almost resulted in a war between the two countries. Brazil paid two million British pounds (around 230 million dollars in 2006) and agreed to construct the Madeira-Mamoré Railway connecting the region to the Amazon River. Thousands of workers died during the construction of the railway.
10. In this state the most important independence movement of the colonial era started in 1789. However it never took place as one of the conspirators betrayed the group. What is it?

Answer: Minas Gerais

The Inconfidência Mineira (Minas Gerais Conspiracy) was deeply influenced by the independence of the thirteen British colonies in the United States. Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (a.k.a. "Tiradentes") was hanged publicly for his participation in the movement. The anniversary of his death (April 21st) is a national holiday in Brazil.
