Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which province has the lowest highest peak?

Answer: Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province and lies on the east coast of the country. It lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is only 5,660 square km in area (3480 square miles). The highest point in this province is only 140 metres (459 feet) above sea level. It is at an unnamed point in the woods in the centre of the province.
2. Which two provinces share their highest point?

Answer: Newfoundland & Labrador and Quebec

This highest point is on the coast of the Labrador Sea in the Torngat mountains. The peak lies on the border between Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. At 1652 m (5420 feet) above sea level, the peak is difficult to access. It also lies in a permit-only National Park, so that makes it even more isolated and difficult to get to.

The peak has two names. Those in Quebec call it Mont D'Iberville, and those on the Labrador side call it Mount Caubvick. It is the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains.
3. Alberta's highest peak is higher than British Columbia's highest peak.

Answer: False

Alberta's highest peak is Mount Columbia. At 3747 metres (12,293 feet) above sea level, it is the second highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. On the other hand, British Columbia's highest peak is not the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. That distinction goes to Mount Robson, which is in BC, but the highest peak in that province lies in the St. Elias Mountain Range.

At 4671 metres (15,325 feet) above sea level, Mount Fairweather is not only the highest peak in British Columbia, but it is one of the tallest coastal mountains in the world. Captain James Cook spotted this peak in 1778.
4. The Appalachian Mountains extend up into Canada's east coast, so it isn't surprising to find some high peaks there. On what island will you find Nova Scotia's highest peak?

Answer: Cape Breton Island

The highest peak in Nova Scotia can be found in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. White Hill lies at 532 metres (1745 feet) above sea level. It is the second smallest highest peak in the country.
5. Ontario's highest peak is named "Ishpatina Ridge". What language is used for this name?

Answer: Ojibway

Ontario's highest peak is tricky to get to. The spot, 692 metres (2270 feet) above sea level, is in the middle of a forest about 692 km (430 miles) north of Sudbury in the far north of the province. The name "Ishpatina" is Ojibway for "High Hill". There is an old fire lookout tower on the spot that visitors are not allowed to climb, so even if it were accessible, there wouldn't be much to see from up there anyway. All of the trees would get in the way.
6. Which of the following is NOT true about the highest peak in the Yukon Territory?

Answer: It is in the Rocky Mountains

Mount Logan is not only the highest peak in the Yukon, but it is also the highest peak in Canada. It is located within Kluane National Park Reserve. At 5959 metres (19,551 feet) above sea level, it is a daunting sight to see. Besides being very tall, it is also very wide; it has the largest base circumference of any non-volcanic mountain in the world.

The mountain was also named after Sir William Logan, the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada. Although he passed away in 1875, the mountain was officially named after him in 1890. Mount Logan does NOT lie in the Rocky Mountains. Rather, it is part of the St. Elias Mountain Range.
7. In which province/territory does Baldy Mountain lie?

Answer: Manitoba

Baldy Mountain is the highest peak in Manitoba. At 832 metres (2,730 feet) above sea level, this is one of the more accessible "high points" in the country. The mountain lies in the Manitoba escarpment, and there is a road that leads to it. The road goes up to the summit where visitors will find an accessible lookout tower.
8. The Northwest Territories has the most northerly highest peak in Canada.

Answer: False

The most northerly highest peak in a Canadian province or territory lies at 81.5 degrees north in Nunavut. This is the highest point on any of Canada's Arctic Islands. There, you will find Barbeau Peak at 2126 metres (6942 feet) above sea level. The highest peak in the Northwest Territories (NWT) is in the MacKenzie range that borders the Yukon.

Although there is no official name for the highest peak in the NWT, it has been unofficially known as Mount Nirvana for over sixty years. Mount Nirvana is 2773 metres (9098 feet) above sea level.
9. What is the name of the highest peak in New Brunswick?

Answer: Mount Carleton

Mount Carleton is part of the Appalachian Mountain range that extends up into Canada's east coast. At 817 metres (2680 feet) above sea level, it is not only New Brunswick's highest peak, but the highest peak in Canada's Maritime provinces. This mountain was named after Thomas Carleton, New Brunswick's first lieutenant governor.
10. Saskatchewan's highest point lies in the middle of what?

Answer: A pasture

Saskatchewan's highest point is at an unnamed point in the middle of a pasture in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. The park straddles with land in Alberta in the southern part of the provinces. The highest point in Saskatchewan is at 1392 metres (4567 feet) above sea level in the Saskatchewan portion of the park.
