Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which of the following seas does Norway NOT have a coastline?

Answer: Black Sea

The Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the North Sea are all marginal seas of the Atlantic Ocean. The Barents Sea borders Norway to the northeast, the Norwegian Sea borders Norway to the northwest and the North Sea borders Norway to the east. Norway also has coastline on the Skagerrak and Kattegat channels.
2. What is the name of the Icelandic volcano which caused major disruption to air travel when it erupted in 2010?

Answer: Eyjafjallajökull

Iceland is a country famous for its geological activity, especially its volcanoes and geysers. This activity occurs because Iceland straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull, although small, released a significant quantity of ash into the atmosphere.

This ash cloud caused significant disruption to air travel as it led to the closure of much of Europe's air space owing to the potential danger the ash particles caused to aeroplane engines.
3. The Faroe Islands are an autonomous region of which Nordic country?

Answer: Denmark

The Faroe Islands are located about halfway between Norway and Iceland. They have been formally under Danish control since the Treaty of Kiel in 1814. During World War II they were occupied by British forces to stop the Nazi forces using them as a base following the invasion of Denmark. Since 1948 the islands have been self-governing although they have remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
4. Finland borders two other Nordic countries - which two?

Answer: Norway and Sweden

Finland has a 736 kilometre border with Norway to the north, and a 614 kilometre border with Sweden to the west. Due to the Nordic Passport Union and the Schengen Agreement, there is free movement across these borders for citizens of Nordic countries, as well as other European states covered by the Schengen Agreement.
5. Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe, is located in which Nordic country?

Answer: Norway

Hornindalsvatnet is a lake in the county of Sogn og Fjordane in the West of Norway. The lake is 514 metres deep making it the deepest lake in Europe. Despite being the deepest lake in Europe, in terms of surface area it is only the 19th largest lake in Norway with an area of fifty square kilometres.
6. In terms of area (not including associated territories), which of the Nordic countries is the largest?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries with an area of just under 450,000 square kilometres. However, if associated territories are taken into account, then Denmark is by far the biggest Nordic country as its total area would include that of Greenland which alone has an area of 2,166,086 square kilometres - more than four times that of Sweden!
7. Despite its name, the main island of Iceland is located to the south of the Arctic Circle.

Answer: True

The Arctic Circle is the name given to the line of latitude located 66 degrees north of the Equator and marks the border of the Arctic Zone and the Northern Temperate Zone. Despite a name which suggests it should be located in the Arctic Zone, mainland Iceland is entirely to the south of the Arctic Circle; however, the Arctic Circle does pass through the Icelandic island of Grimsey, which is located about 25 miles to the north of the main island.
8. In which Nordic country is it possible to visit the original Legoland, located in the town of Billund?

Answer: Denmark

Legoland Billund is the original Legoland theme park and was opened in 1968. The plastic, brick-based toy, Lego, was invented in Denmark and the theme park was built next to the original factory in the Danish town of Billund. One of the most famous features of Legoland is the area called 'Miniland' which features scale models of famous landmarks - all constructed out of Lego bricks.
9. Which mountain, located in Norway, is the highest mountain of the Nordic countries?

Answer: Galdhøpiggen

Galdhøpiggen is located in the Jotunheimen range in southern Norway. Its peak is 2,469 meters above sea level. Galdhøpiggen is home to a small summer ski resort which is usually open from June to September when the road to the tourist station of Juvasshytta is open.
10. The Øresund Bridge connects the Swedish city of Malmo to which Nordic capital city?

Answer: Copenhagen

The Øresund Bridge carries road and rail traffic between the Danish capital Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmo, crossing the Øresund strait. Although it is usually referred to as a bridge, it is actually a combination of bridge and tunnel which join at an artificial island called Peberholm.

The bridge was opened in 2000 and in 2002 it won the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Outstanding Structure Award.
