Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the body of water in which the islands are situated?

Answer: St. Lawrence River

The St. Lawrence Seaway is the route by which ocean-going vessels reach the Great Lakes. From shore, you can watch a wide variety of cargo ships from many countries pass by.
2. Are there really over 1,000 islands in the area?

Answer: Yes

According to the tourism bureau, there are 1,864 islands that comprise the Thousand Island area. To qualify, the island must be above water year-round and must support at least one living tree. There is no size requirement, and some of the islands are really REALLY small!
3. One of the most famous sights in the islands is located on Heart Island. What is it?

Answer: A castle.

Boldt Castle has a very romantic history. The man who built it, George Boldt, was the proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. He did so as a tribute to his wife, who perished at a young age before the castle was completed. Boldt, heartbroken, left the island and stopped the construction of the partly erected castle.

It stands to this day unfinished, although in recent years some of its rooms have been improved.
4. There is a bridge that crosses the island region from the US to Canada. What is its name?

Answer: The Thousand Islands International Bridge

The Thousand Islands International Bridge is in a section of the Thousand Islands where there are many tiny islands located a matter of feet from one another--you can get pleasure boats through the channels separating them, but nothing bigger. The scenery from the bridge is of the oooh-ahhhh variety.
5. If you cross the border from north to south at the Thousand Islands, what Canadian Province will you leave, and what US state will you enter?

Answer: Ontario and New York

The Canadian town of Gananoque and the American town of Alexandria Bay are the closest to the bridge. The area is generally quite sparsely populated without its multitude of tourists.
6. A condiment got its name from the Thousand Islands. What is it?

Answer: a salad dressing

Thousand Island Dressing originated there. It's made from ketchup, mayonnaise and pickle relish.
7. Besides offering beautiful sights and fodder for photographers, what else is the area known for?

Answer: Fishing, fishing, and more fishing

The area teems with northern pike, walleye, black bass, rock bass, muskie, and freshwater perch.
8. A short distance from the Thousand Islands is something called the Rideau Canal locks system. What is a "locks system"?

Answer: A means of mechanically conveying a vessel to a higher or lower elevation on a waterway.

Locks are a sort of water-filled "elevator" system. A boat drives into the lock the water level inside the enclosure is either lowered or raised. When the water level in the lock equals the level of the water where the boat is headed, the lock is opened and the boat can proceed. The Rideau System is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. The locks at most of the 24 lock stations are still operated by hand, much as they were when the canal first opened in 1832.
9. How were the Thousand Islands formed?

Answer: They were left behind when the last ice age ended and glaciers retreated to the North, leaving behind formations of very hard rock. Water filled in the depressions between the formations.

The Thousand Islands were formed during the retreat of the last ice age, which exposed the hard granite and gneiss characteristic of the Canadian Shield. Covered with vegetation, the islands often appear to pop out of the water, resembling mushroom caps.
10. Besides the multi-lane bridge that joins Canada and the U.S.A., there is another bridge of some fame in the Thousand Islands. What is it?

Answer: In local folklore, the shortest international bridge between Canada and the U.S.A.

It is generally acknowledged today that this tiny foot bridge joining two equally tiny islands lies entirely within Canada, so it isn't really an international bridge at all. However, local tour guides for decades touted the bridge as the shortest span between the two countries.
