Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From its completion in 1981, which of these reigned for 17 years as the longest suspension bridge in the world?

Answer: Humber

With a central span of 1410 metres, the Humber Bridge is the world's third longest suspension bridge, after the Akashi Kaikyo in Japan and the Great Belt in Denmark. It is named after the river over which it is suspended, close to Hull, in the east of England, and was completed in 1981.
2. Which of these was an early European explorer of the St. Lawrence River?

Answer: Cartier

Deceived by its width, Jacques Cartier was actually searching for a route to China along the St Lawrence River. Even when he reached the first major rapids in 1535, he thought China was just upriver (Hence the name Lachine Rapids).
3. Correctly select which of the following is the geographical province of Ireland containing, amongst seven others, County Donegal and County Down.

Answer: Ulster

The modern province of Ulster contains three counties of Eire, and the six counties which make up Northern Ireland, currently part of the United Kingdom.
4. Which of the following is a Canadian town important to the development of trans-Atlantic aviation?

Answer: Gander

Gander was established in 1938 as an aviation service centre, and is still an important industrial airport town today.
5. Rising in the Carpathian mountains, this European river flows almost 1400 km to empty into the Black Sea southwest of Odessa.

Answer: Dniester

The Dneiper is much longer (over 2,200 km) and rises west of Moscow to flow in a generally southerly direction. The Black Sea is one of the world's most polluted, with a layer of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, and ethane on the bottom which is rising by two metres per year.
6. Based on post-WWII planning principles, this American 'New City' is located in the San Francisco Bay area.

Answer: Foster

England has Runcorn and Milton Keynes, the U.S. has Reston (VA) and Columbia (MD). The history of Foster City's development and incorporation seems to centre more on litigation than on urban architecture. -That's America I guess...
7. Who of these men was a U.S sea captain and early explorer of the Antarctic region?

Answer: Palmer

The Antarctic Peninsula, which protrudes northward toward Cape Horn and the Southern tip of South America, was originally named Palmer Land, after Nathaniel Palmer, who spotted it in 1820.
8. This historic Tor, which was partly looted by Napoleon, sat astride Berlin's East/West divide until 1989.

9. This city houses the first piece of property acquired abroad by the United States government, and was the first nation in the world to recognize the U.S. as a country.

Answer: Tangier

Morocco officially recognised the United States of America way back in 1777, and the legation building was a gift to the United States from Sultan Moulay Suliman in 1821. Tangier was an international zone from 1923 until Morocco's independence in 1956, and today the city has a population of 550,000.
10. This southwest English county capital contains buildings dating from Roman times, and was once a favourite haunt of the likes of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Answer: Exeter

Exeter is the county capital of Devon. It is a city of over 110,000 people, and Exeter's historic core has been designated as one of only five Areas of Archaeological Importance in England.
