Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Africa is almost as wide as it is long. The southernmost point is in South Africa, the northernmost in Tunisia, and the easternmost point in Somalia. What country is the westernmost point of the mainland in?

Answer: Senegal

Senegal's capital, Dakar, is the westernmost point on the mainland of Africa. If you include island nations then it would be Cape Verde, about six-hundred miles off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.
2. Every country has a lowest point. Which country has the world's highest lowest point?

Answer: Lesotho

Lesotho, a small nation surrounded entirely by South Africa, is raised incredibly high. There is not a point in the country that dips below one thousand meters of elevation. The world's highest lowest point is located where the Orange and the Makhaleng rivers meets. The Earth's lowest highest point, however, is in the Maldives.
3. The Caprivi Strip is a narrow piece of land in which African country?

Answer: Namibia

The Caprivi Strip sticks out from northeastern Namibia giving the country borders with Zambia and Zimbabwe, and access to the Zambezi River.
4. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. It borders three countries. Which one of these does NOT border it?

Answer: Rwanda

Lake Victoria is 26,800 sq. mi. making it the largest lake in Africa and third in the world.
5. Only one country in Africa has Spanish as its official language. What is this country which has its capital on an island off the coast of the nation?

Answer: Equatorial Guinea

Many countries in Africa speak English, Arabic, or French but only Equatorial Guinea speaks Spanish. It is also the only African nation that gained its independence from Spain.

Equatorial Guinea's capital is Malabo which is on the island of Bioko, northwest of the mainland.
6. What is the name of the lake in Djibouti that is Africa's lowest point?

Answer: Assal

Lake Assal in central Djibouti is the deepest point in Africa (and third deepest in the world) at 512 feet below sea level.

Lake Albert is on the Uganda - D.R. Congo border, Lake Tana is in northern Ethiopia, and Lake Volta is in Ghana.
7. The Suez Canal in Egypt connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. What year was construction finished?

Answer: 1868

The Suez Canal construction began in 1858 and was completed ten years later in 1868. It runs 101 miles, connects the Mediterranean and Red seas, creates the Sinai peninsula, and makes it so ships do not have to go around the continent of Africa.
8. How many independent African island nations are in the Indian Ocean?

Answer: 4

They are Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles. There are two other island nations in Africa in the Atlantic Ocean: Cape Verde and Sao Tome & Principe.
