Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is located on the eastern slopes of an active volcano called Pichincha in the Andes mountain range. The historic centre of the city was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1978. Other places of interest in the city include Carondelet Palace which is the seat of the government, Basilica del Voto Nacional and the Cathedral of Quito.
