1. Which of the following titles did English King Charles II give to Virginia?

Answer: Old Dominion

Virginia calls itself a Commonwealth. Virginia has a rich history and was one of the original thirteen colonies. Virginia and Maryland donated land to form Washington D.C., the US national capital. Virginia was given the title "Old Dominion" by King Charles II of England at the time of the Restoration, because it had remained loyal to the crown during the English Civil War.
2. Virginia is also called the 'Mother of ___'. Complete the nickname.

Answer: Presidents

At least eight of the US Presidents have been from Virginia. George Washington, first President of the US, was born at Mount Vernon. Thomas Jefferson, third President, was born at Monticello. James Madison, fourth President was born at Montpelier. James Monroe, the fifth US President, was born at Ash Lawn. William Henry Harrison was the ninth US President, and was born at Berkeley Plantation. John Tyler, the tenth US President, was born at Sherwood Forest, Virginia. 5. Western-central Virginia has a beautiful valley area. What is the valley's name?

Answer: Shenandoah

Poems have been penned about the awesome beauty of the Shenandoah Valley. It has caverns that attract tourists annually to the area as well.

The Shenandoah Valley features beautiful farms and inns along winding country roads and the popular Skyline Drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway is probably the most beautiful parkway in the U.S. One of the natural wonders of the world is Virginia's 100-million-year-old Natural Bridge.

The region has many caverns, which include Luray and Shenandoah, which has an elevator to take tourists underground. With each lowering step into the cavern, the temperature goes down one degree!
6. Virginia was one of the original Thirteen Colonies.

Answer: True

Since being settled, Virginia has been home to several affluent citizens (many being US Presidents and their families). Virginia is also the home of Arlington and Arlington Cemetery, where countless fallen heroes are laid to rest, including US Presidents. Arlington was originally owned by Robert E. Lee's spouse's family.

The property was requested from him at the close of the war and dedicated to the military's fallen heroes! Virginians were instrumental in writing the United States Constitution. James Madison drafted the Virginia Plan in 1787 and the Bill of Rights in 1789. Virginia ratified the Constitution on June 25, 1788.
7. What is the state bird of Virginia?

Answer: cardinal

The cardinal is Virginia's beautiful red bird! The male bird is bright red with a black face and a prominent red crest. The female is a soft gray with red accents on her wings, tail and beak. Cardinals are really beautiful in the white snow!

8. What is the state flower of Virginia?

Answer: dogwood

The state flower is the dogwood. Have you read 'The Legend of the Dogwood Tree'?

From 'The Legend of the Dogwood Tree':

"When Christ was on earth, the dogwood grew
To a towering size with a lovely hue.
Its branches were strong and interwoven
And for Christ's cross its timbers were chosen

Being distressed,
At the use of this wood
Christ made a promise,
Which still holds good:

"Not ever again shall the dogwood grow
To be large enough for a tree, and so
Slender and twisted it shall always be
With cross-shaped blossoms for all to see.

The petals shall have bloodstains,
Marked in brown
And in the blossom's center,
A thorny crown.

All who see it,
Will think of me,
Nailed to a cross,
From a dogwood tree.

Protected and cherished,
This tree shall be
A reflection to all,
Of my agony."

9. What is the state insect of Virginia?

Answer: swallowtail butterfly

The climate in Virginia is mild, but it has distinct seasons. Virginia's state motto is 'Virginia is for Lovers', which was adopted in 1969. Virginians are supposed to 'Live Passionately', just as the Founding Fathers lived!
10. Where was colonial Virginia's capital city moved to in 1698, after the third burning of the Capitol building in the Jamestown Settlement?

Answer: Williamsburg

Another part of Virginia history includes the first successful English colony, Jamestown, founded and settled in 1607. This is where the Founding Fathers worked on many important documents that would later become essential to America's future independence and laws. Patrick Henry, George Washington, George Mason, George Wythe, Richard Henry Lee, Jefferson, and others played their parts in the written documents as well. Try to visit the area when possible.

There are exact replicas of the three ships that came to Jamestown in 1607.

They are named Godspeed, Discovery and Susan Constant, and are docked near the Jamestown Settlement.
