Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Japan has around how many active volcanoes?

Answer: 100

Japan contains approximately 10% of the world's active volcanoes. Almost half of these are closely monitored by scientists because of their capacity for violent eruptions. As of 2021, there are 110 active volcanoes in Japan, but this could change.
2. Which of these Japanese volcanoes erupted so forcefully in 1914 that it turned the small island it was located on into a peninsula?

Answer: Sakurajima

The lava flow from Sakurajima's 1914 eruption travelled through the narrow straight between the island and Japan's mainland, creating a land connection. Sakurajima had been dormant in Japan for over 100 years, before it erupted in 1914. It now erupts much more frequently, particularly since the 1950s.
3. Which of these is the most active volcano on the Japanese island of Honshū?

Answer: Mount Asama

Mount Asama stands over 8,000 feet above sea level. In Japan's first colour film "Carmen Comes Home" Mount Asama is regularly referenced, as well as being the backdrop of the film.
4. Mount Fuji is both the highest peak and the highest volcano in Japan. When did it last erupt?

Answer: 1707

Mount Fuji is located about 60 miles from Japan's capital, Tokyo. The 1707 eruption of Mount Fuji, named the "Hoei" Eruption after the Japanese era of the time, was foreshadowed by a 8.4 magnitude earthquake that tore through Honshu island. Volcanologists have warned that Mount Fuji is "on stand-by" for a next eruption, after 300 years of silence from the volcano.
5. Which Japanese volcano erupted in 1792 causing earthquakes and landslides, and killed an estimated 15,000 people?

Answer: Mount Unzen

Mount Unzen is located near the city of Shimabara, in the Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. Mount Unzen also erupted in 1991, killing 43 people.
6. Ōgamiyama Jinja are the Shinto shrines originally created for the worship of what volcano of Japan?

Answer: Mount Daisen

Mount Daisen is the highest point in the Chūgoku region, the westernmost region of Honshū. Daisen was a very important mountain in the Shugendō religion. Daisen lies on the Sea of Japan, and the Daisen-ji Buddhist temple has stood on the banks of this mountain, since the Heian period of 794-1185.
7. Which Japanese volcano is both the second-highest volcano, and 14th highest mountain of Japan?

Answer: Mount Ontake

Mount Ontake is just over 10,000 feet high. It is located between Gifu and Nagano prefectures, about 60 miles northeast of the city of Nagoya, central Honshu island. It is about 120 miles west of the capital, Tokyo.

Mount Ontake erupted in 2014, killing 63 people. It was the worst death toll since the 1991 Mount Unzen eruption.
8. What prefecture of Japan is stratovolcano Mount Bandai located in?

Answer: Fukushima

Mount Bandai is located close to the fourth-largest lake in Japan, Lake Inawashiro. In 1888 during the Meiji era, Mount Bandai erupted, killing an estimated nearly 500 people. Pyroclastic flows (which are fast moving currents of volcanic ash, hot gas and solidified lava) devastated villages, many of which were completely buried.
9. Which of these Japanese volcanoes is located only about six miles away from the city of Nagano, capital of Nagano Prefecture?

Answer: Mount Iizuna

This mountain/volcano is sacred to the Shugendō religion, and others. There are stone Buddhas along the hiking trail, as well as a shrine at the top. You can see Mount Iizuna from anywhere in the city of Nagano.
10. Which Japanese volcano was featured in the 1967 James Bond film, 'You Only Live Twice'?

Answer: Shinmoedake

Shinmoedake is a volcano on the Japanese island of Kyūshū, the south-westernmost of the main islands of Japan. Shots of Shinmoedake were used as the villain's secret volcano lair.
