Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Near Nockamixon State Park, there are two large pyramids and one small topless pyramid. They are connected to a religious sect. Name this sect.

Answer: Rosicrucians

They belong to the Rosicrucians, otherwise known as the Fraternitas Rosae Crusis. Ben Franklin was even a member!
2. From 1947 to 1969, the Air Force collected reports of UFOs around the country in Project Blue Book. A total of 12,618 reports were collected. Only 701 cases remain to be explained. How many of those 701 cases occurred in Pennsylvania?

Answer: 16

Taking place in towns including Altoona, Allentown, Juniata, and Pottstown, the reports occurred over a series of 14 years. However, the 16 reports did not include Pennsylvania's own Roswell, the Kecksburg UFO crash.
3. Pennsylvania has a lake monster. It lives in Lake Erie. What is its name?

Answer: Bessie

Also known as South Bay Bessie, it was first seen in 1960. One theory on what Bessie is is that the lake sturgeon, thought to be extinct in the lake, is still alive, and most Bessie sightings are really lake sturgeon.
4. A group of hermits once lived near Wissahickon Creek, near Philadelphia. In 1708, the leader of the group, named Kelpius, was dying of pneumonia. According to legend, he gave his assistant, Daniel Giessler, a box and told him to throw it into the Schuylkill River. What do some people believe was in the box?

Answer: The philosopher's stone

Giessler tried to hide the box at first, but Kelpius caught on and made him throw it in. When the box hit the water, there was an explosion, along with flashes of lightning and a crash resembling thunder. The Rosicrucians erected a monument to the monks in 1961.
5. Where can you find Columcille?

Answer: Bangor

Its exact address is 2115 Fox Gap Road, Bangor. Apparently, really bizarre things occur there at night. Some of the citizens of Bangor won't even talk about it!
6. What is unusual about the Bradford branch of the McDonald's fast food chain?

Answer: There's an oil well in the parking lot

The oil well brings up thirty gallons of oil a day. It has been in operation since the 1870s. If you go there, please refrain from making jokes about wanting oil on your burger!
7. In what town was the H tree located?

Answer: Lansdale

It was said that the tree was a gate to hell. It was on a cliff and if you walked around the trunk of one of the sides of the H shaped tree six times, and jumped of the cliff, the ground would open up and take you to hell. It was knocked down during construction of a housing development. Hopefully, you aren't the one living in the house where it once stood!
8. What historical figure appeared to a group of Union soldiers at the battle of Gettysburg?

Answer: George Washington

The soldiers were in the 20th Maine Division, and George, on a white horse, led them to a strategic point that aided the Union victory. Some visitors still report seeing a man on a white horse ride across the battlefield!
9. What inspired Edgar Allen Poe to write "The Tell-Tale Heart"?

Answer: A ticking grave

The grave, located in Landenberg, Chester County, PA created a ticking noise since the 1800s. Unfortunately, it has stopped. However, in its day, it supposedly sent children to the hospital!
10. What town has had a coal fire burning beneath it since 1962?

Answer: Centralia

Started by a burning trash pit, the fire shows no sign of stopping, as the coal vein that is on fire has enough fuel to burn for centuries. Temperatures just thirty feet below the ground have been recorded at 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit!
