Bangalore is the name by which the city was known from its inception. In the local language Kannada, it is pronounced as Bengalooru and the name was changed in 2014 to Bengaluru. Incidentally, the name Bangalore is derived from the word 'Benda kalooru' or 'the city of boiled beans'. Legend has it that, when one of the kings of the Hoysala Dynasty visited the city, he was fed boiled beans and he gave this name to the city.

This outsourcing is referred to as being 'Bangalored'. In fact, this issue featured in the 2004 US Presidential election when it was raised by Democratic candidate John Kerry.
