Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these groups contains an island named Flores?

Answer: Azores

The Flores island in the Azores is a little over 140 square kilometers in area, and has a population of around 4000 people. It was first inhabited (by sheep!) in the mid-fifteenth century, and permanent human settlement began in 1480.

As well as the Azores, the Sunda Island group in Indonesia has a Flores Island, and the city of Flores is one of the departmental capitals of Guatemala. The word Flores means "flowers" in Portuguese.
2. Made famous when entertainer George took it for his stage name, in which country of the United Kingdom is the town of Formby?

Answer: England

Formby lies just outside the major city conurbation of Liverpool, on Merseyside, in England.
The earliest known permanent settlement of the area dates back to the Vikings in the ninth century, but traces of human activity have been found which date back to around 4000 BC.

The first entertainer to use the name was born James Lawler Booth, and according to popular belief he chose the name George Formby after he saw a train heading to the town and liked the sound of it. His son, born George Hoy Booth, followed in his father's footsteps and became more famous, mainly due to his comic songs, which he accompanied on his trademark ukulele.
3. The State of Florida in the US is famous for its oranges, sunshine, and as a holiday destination for millions of tourists every year. Another 'claim to fame' is that Florida has the "lowest high point of any State" at a little over 100 metres above sea level. Which hill is this high point?

Answer: Britton Hill

At just 105m elevation, there are actually skyscrapers in Florida that are taller than Britton Hill. The tallest of these in the early 21st century, a hotel in Miami, is over twice as high, at 240 metres!

Tallahassee in Leon County, in the northern part of the state, has been the capital of Florida since 1824, when the area was still "The Florida Territory" rather than a State.
