Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which movie, featuring a pair of humpback whales, has its climatic scene take place under this iconic, San Francisco bridge?

Answer: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Due to the location of Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy being in San Francisco, many of the "Star Trek" films have scenes in a futuristic version of the city. In the 1986 film "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", however, upon returning to Earth after the events of "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", they find the planet under attack from a mysterious probe. To save the Earth, the crew timewarps to the past to retrieve a pair of humpback whales, the only creatures that can respond to the probe. Where do they go to get them? San Francisco, where two whales are at the Cetacean Institute.
2. San Diego was the choice for the setting of this movie, that featured Will Ferrell in the title role. Which film?

Answer: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

San Diego is the setting for the incredible comedy "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", starring Will Ferrell and a terrific supporting cast. Taking place in the mid-1970s, Burgundy and his news team friends are forced to cope with the imposition of a new *female* hiree assigned to the team. Hilarity ensues.
3. The 2012 action film "Fire with Fire", starring Josh Duhamel, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson and Vincent D'Onofrio, was set in which city, located in Los Angeles County?

Answer: Long Beach

While many movies use Long Beach as a filming location, there are not many films actually set in Long Beach. In "Fire with Fire", Josh Duhamel is Jeremy Coleman, a firefighter living in Long Beach who witnesses a murder committed by crime boss David Hagan, played by Vincent D'Onofrio. Jeremy must go into witness protection after fingering Hagan for the crime, but when Hagan is released from prison, witness protection is not enough as Hagan goes after Jeremy's girlfriend Talia (played by Rosario Dawson). Jeremy must return to his Long Beach hometown to confront Hagan in a showdown. Bruce Willis was the police detective involved with the case.
4. The house of Tony Stark (Iron Man) is a major part of the films, as it is where he lives and constructs his Iron Man suits. In "Iron Man 3" he even broadcasts his address to the Mandarin, daring him to attack. In which city does Tony Stark live?

Answer: Malibu

His challenge to the Mandarin: "On the off chance you're a man, here's my home address: 10880 Malibu Point, 90265. I'll leave the door unlocked. That's what you wanted, right?"

While Tony Stark lives in Malibu in the "Iron Man" films, the house as portrayed doesn't actually exist in real life. The cliff that it is on, however, does. In actuality, the location of Stark's fictional home is Point Dume, at the northern end of Santa Monica Bay. A protected area, no construction is allowed there. The home in the movies is a combination of computer-generated imagery and studio sets.

"Iron Man" (2008) and its sequels are adapted from the Marvel comic books of the same name and follow Tony Stark's journey from playboy weapons manufacturer to high-tech armoured superhero. Stark, of course, was played by Robert Downey, Jr.
5. What movie series was set in the fictional California town of Hill Valley?

Answer: Back to the Future

Starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Emmett Brown, the "Back to the Future" franchise has become a classic. The original film was released in 1985, with "Part II" and "Part III" coming out in 1989 and 1990, respectively.

Each film revolves around the idea of a DeLorean having been converted into a time machine, which needs to drive 88 mph in order to work. In each case, Marty must fix a problem that has occurred in order to put time right. In the first film, he goes back (from 1985) to 1955 and inadvertently interferes with his parents' first meeting. In the second, Doc Brown brings him to the future (2015) to prevent Marty's son from going to jail. The third film has Marty going back to 1885 to save Doc Brown (who had been accidentally sent back at the end of "Part II") from being shot.
6. This sign is often used as an establish shot to provide the setting of a scene in a film. In which of these films does it NOT appear?

Answer: The Rock

The Hollywood Sign makes an appearance in many movies (over 70, according to the Hollywood Sign web page), as well as in television shows and video games. In "S.W.A.T." (2003), the sign takes the opening shot as a helicopter flies over the sign towards downtown Los Angeles. When Naomi Watts' character comes to L.A. in "Mulholland Drive" (about 20 minutes in), the sign makes an appearance. The sign appears at the beginning of "City of Angels" (1998), complete with various angels standing on it.

"The Rock" (1996) took place, of course, in San Francisco.
7. Which of these literary characters, depicted numerous times on film, has his home in California?

Answer: Zorro

Zorro was a character created by author Johnston McCulley in 1919. With the 'real' name of Don Diego de la Vega, Zorro was a Los Angeles-based Spanish nobleman by day, and a vigilante in support of the common people at night. The first time Zorro graced the silver screen was only a year after he was created, with 1920's "The Mark of Zorro", starring Douglas Fairbanks.

Zorro has been depicted in more than 60 books (by the original author), and more than 40 films, not to mention television and radio programs.
8. In which of these "James Bond" films does the villain plan to flood Silicon Valley?

Answer: A View to a Kill

Roger Moore, in his last appearance (1985) as James Bond, and Christopher Walken as the greedy and unscrupulous Max Zorin made for a memorable movie. By exploding bombs beneath the lakes along the San Andreas Fault, the whole of Silicon Valley would be flooded (according to Zorin). Zorin's plan to monopolize the microchip industry is foiled by Bond with the help of Zorin's assassin May Day (played by Grace Jones), who switches sides when she realizes that she has been abandoned to die.
9. The 2009 Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth" takes place in what city, also the state capital?

Answer: Sacramento

Sacramento is the capital city of California, but only the sixth largest city in the state. The bridge in the photo is the historic Tower Bridge, crossing the Sacramento River.

In "The Ugly Truth", Heigl (Abby Richter) and Butler (Mike Chadway) are both involved with local television, although they both have widely differing viewpoints. Mike's show is called "The Ugly Truth" wherein he talks cynically about relationships, among other things. Abby, the producer of the Sacramento morning news show, is experiencing poor ratings on her show, and the station ends up hiring Mike to make an appearance.
10. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is featured in many movies, providing the opportunity for California's largest city to be the backdrop for the action. Which of these movies does NOT have an LAPD cop as the main character?

Answer: Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

"Beverly Hills Cop" (1984) starred Eddie Murphy as Detroit police detective Axel Foley, come to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his friend (who had come to visit him in Detroit when he was killed). Even though his involvement in the investigation is refused by the LAPD, Foley carries on anyways.

In "Dragnet" (1987), the main characters are in the LAPD (Dan Aykroyd as Sgt Joe Friday and Tom Hanks as Detective Pep Streebeck). In "Lethal Weapon", both Mel Gibson (as Martin Riggs) and Danny Glover (as Roger Murtaugh) are LAPD. In "The Rookie", Clint Eastwood is a veteran LAPD cop (named Nick Pulovski) saddled with rookie Charlie Sheen (as David Ackerman).
