Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One morning I went to her house. She had left a note on the door saying she was "going out". She said she was going to a state where the capital city is on Interstate 20, but she was not going to the capital. What city did she take off to?

Answer: Carrollton, Georgia

The only capital city on Interstate 20 that fits this list is Atlanta, GA, but since she was not going there, it couldn't be Atlanta. Interstate 20 does not go through Carrollton, TX, but Interstate 35E does. Carrollton, GA, is about 50 miles west-southwest of Atlanta, GA, south of Interstate 20. Carrollton was not the original name planned for the city, but was incorporated as Carrollton back in December 1829. The original name was planned as Troupville, but Troup was disliked by the state, so they decided against it.

Carrollton, TX, is a suburb of Dallas on the north side, although, there is also a Dallas, GA, northwest of Atlanta.
2. After leaving, she gave a note to my contact person. This note told me to go to a city known for its large sporting goods store, whose headquarters are also located there. The note also stated that it was a city on Interstate 44. There is also a cavern that she told me to look at. Where in the world did she take off to?

Answer: Springfield, Missouri

While Interstate 44 does go through 15 miles of northwest Texas, there is no Springfield along that route. Neither Arkansas nor Illinois see Interstate 44, although in both cases, they are close. Arkansas just misses the northwest corner, and Illinois just misses it off Interstate 55 in St. Louis.

The Bass Pro Shops headquarters are based in Springfield, MO, and they have a store along Campbell Rd., also known as US 160. The cavern she is referring to is Fantastic Caverns on the east side of the city. The cavern offers a ride-through route and the tour takes just under an hour to complete. It was originally discovered in 1862 and kept under wraps for the following five years.
3. After leaving the cavern and sporting goods behind, I found a note from her. Upon reading, I was told to go to a state that has diamond mines in it. What city has she sent me to this time?

Answer: Jacksonville, Arkansas

The Arkansas state quarter had a diamond on it, as there are still mining activities at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in southwest Arkansas. This mine is open to the public, unlike many mines. Jacksonville, however, is approximately ten miles northeast of Little Rock on US 67/167.

Colorado also has a diamond mine, but it closed in 2001.
4. I just missed her, but she left a note for me saying she was going to see a city where tulips line the streets. The city's high school band performed at the Tulip Time Festival for over 50 years in a city with the name of a country. Where has she gone to?

Answer: Charlotte, Michigan

The city that held the Tulip Time Festival was Holland, MI. Holland is about eighty-five miles west of Charlotte. Until 1991, the high school band participated in the Festival's Band Revue; it began performing in the Revue in 1937.
5. She snuck out of town without a trace, except for the note she left behind. This one told me I needed to go to a city whose state capital name was famous for some trials in the late 1600s (but it wasn't that location). It was also named after a US Vice President. Where have I gone to this time?

Answer: Dallas, Oregon

The Salem Witch Trials happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Salem is the state capital of Oregon. Dallas, Oregon is about 15 minutes west of Salem on State Route 22. The city was named after James K. Polk's vice president, George Dallas.
6. No one was there, but a passerby found a note with my name on it. I read the note, and it told me to go to a state where two cereal manufacturers have been headquartered for years. This city was not on an Interstate highway nor any US highway. What city have I been led to now?

Answer: Athens, Michigan

The two cereal companies that are located in Battle Creek, MI, about 20 miles north of Athens, are Kellogg's and Post. Kellogg's had a hand in coercing the cities of Battle Creek and Battle Creek Township into one by taking their headquarters elsewhere if they didn't, which could have cost the city a significant amount of tax revenue and employment to their residents. This happened in 1982.

Athens, AL falls on Interstate 65 between Montgomery, AL and Nashville, TN. Athens, TX and Athens, GA are both on different US highways; Texas's falls on US 175 southeast of Dallas, and Georgia's is at the intersection of US 29/129 and US 78.
7. After looking all over town unsuccessfully, I learned that she'd left another note for me. This note told me to go to a city where the inventor of the gas mask and a former First Lady once lived. She was also at a fort about two hours away, where a lot of a precious metal was held. Where has she sent me to now?

Answer: Paris, Kentucky

Mary Todd, who married Abraham Lincoln, was born in Paris, as well as Garrett Morgan, who was credited with the invention of the gas mask. The fort she was referring to was Fort Knox, where the United States' gold reserve was kept. The Bullion Depository was completed in 1936, since American citizens were not allowed to own gold coins after a 1933 by decree of Franklin Roosevelt.
8. I made it in, and she left a note for me stating she was going to a city in a state that was admitted to the United States in the 20th century. She said it was NOT on an Interstate highway. What city has she gone to?

Answer: Miami, Arizona

The only two that it could be are Miami, OK or Miami, AZ. Both of those states were admitted after 1900, but Miami, OK is situated on Interstate 44, about 20 miles southwest of Joplin, MO. Not too far out of Miami, AZ, there are several copper mines nearby, although most of them are no longer mined. Jack Elam was a resident there at one time.

Texas, admitted in 1845, and Missouri, admitted in 1821, were both in the 19th century, so neither of those could have been where she went.
9. After leaving the mines, she left a note saying she was going to a city where they round up rattlesnakes annually. This is the largest in the United States. She also said it was on a major Interstate highway and a county seat. What city am I going to?

Answer: Sweetwater, Texas

While there are several cities that do rattlesnake round-ups, Sweetwater's, held during the early part of March, is the largest round-up in the nation. Sweetwater is situated forty miles west of Abilene, TX, on Interstate 20, which runs from just west of Pecos, TX, all the way into South Carolina where, at Interstate 95, it ends. It is also the county seat of Nolan County, TX.
10. Before she left, she put a note on a table at a restaurant for me, since she guessed I'd be a fan of the rattlesnake meat. She claimed that she was going to see a chapel known for its "kewpie"-type dolls. What city did she travel to?

Answer: Carthage, Missouri

The chapel she is referring to is the Precious Moments Chapel. Carthage, MO is ten miles northeast of Joplin just north of Interstate 44. When taking US 71 through Carthage, exit at Missouri Highway HH and head west to Chapel Rd. She sent me across the country to find her waiting with a bridal dress on. She wanted to get married there since she is a big fan of their dolls.
