Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, the country I live in has several theme parks, two of them being "Alton Towers" and "Blackpool Pleasure Beach". Where am I?

Answer: England

Leicester to be precise, home of world famous people such as Thomas Cook, Lord Richard Attenborough and his brother David, Lady Jane Grey and John Merrick (the Elephant Man). Not only this, but Dick Turpin used to take refuge here at a pub called "The Cock Inn" in a little village called Sibson.
2. My first trip abroad was in 1976 when I visited the country that was hosting that year's summer Olympics. Where was I?

Answer: Canada

The Olympics were being held in Montreal that year, but being only six at the time, the only thing I remember about this holiday was the triple coned ice cream!
3. I didn't go abroad again until 1989, when I went on a coach trip of Europe. The first place that the tour took us to was the country who would later win the soccer World Cup in 1998. Where was I?

Answer: France

That incredible French team, including players such as Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, also won the next big football tournament - Euro 2000 - in Rotterdam.
4. At the next stop I did some skiing, or at least attempted to, in Lauterbrunnen. Where was this?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland has some incredible scenic views, especially if you take the cog railway to the summit of the Jungfrau mountain. It takes three hours, but it's well worth it.
5. Italy was next on the agenda, where I visited the city with the fourth largest cathedral in the world - Santa Maria del Fiore. Exactly where was I?

Answer: Florence

You wouldn't want to miss this city if you're interested in Art. It is home to the vast majority of the Italian Renaissance and houses the Uffizi Gallery amongst its many tourist attractions.
6. Next we moved on to the country where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. Which was?

Answer: Austria

I stayed in Innsbruck. If you take a cable car up Mount Hafelekar, you will witness one of the most breathtaking views in Europe.
7. The next country we visited was in the throes of its annual beer festival - Oktoberfest. Where does this take place?

Answer: Germany

I stayed right in the heart of all the celebrations - Munich. This city offers scenic views of the snowcapped Alps, and according to several opinion polls, is the city that most native Germans would like to live in.
8. Max Bygraves had a hit about the last place I visited on the tour. It was called "Tulips From...."?

Answer: Amsterdam

If you're visiting Amsterdam, it's well worth doing a cruise of the canals beginning at Damrak. The city is also home to the fascinating Van Gogh museum.
9. On the coach trip, I met a young Canadian lady called Michelle, who I went to stay with for my next two ventures abroad in 1990 and 1991. She supported an ice hockey team called "The Flames". Which part of Canada are this team based in?

Answer: Calgary

Hosts of the Winter Olympics of 1988, Calgary is a beautiful place, and a superb place to stay if you're planning to visit the Rocky Mountains. And yes I did fancy her, before you ask.
10. I saved up lots of money so that I could afford the long trip to Australia in 1993. I visited the two places that "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" are filmed respectively. Where is this?

Answer: Melbourne and Sydney

I have so many fond memories of Australia, although the "Brown Snake slithering over bare foot" incident is one I'd rather forget!
11. A quick flight to New Zealand was next, straight into the capital, which is what?

Answer: Wellington

Probably the highlight of my trip to NZ was a boat excursion to the eerie but beautiful Milford Sound - the most famous and accessible of the many glacier carved fiords along the Southern West Coast.
12. I stopped off in Singapore for a few days before returning home. What is the name of Singapore's world famous hotel?

Answer: Raffles

I couldn't believe how beautifully clean Singapore was! Then again, given how strict the law enforcement is over there, you wouldn't want to be seen dropping a sweet wrapper, trust me!
13. In 1995 and 1996 I visited various parts of the USA, including New York, Colorado, Las Vegas and Utah. However the highlight of my time in this country was probably when I visited Disneyland. Where is this located?

Answer: California

I hope you didn't fall for the obvious trick of going for Florida, where DisneyWORLD is based rather than DisneyLAND!!
14. In 2000, I met Angela and we married in August 2001. We took our honeymoon first near St.Mark's Square and then not far from the Spanish Steps. Where were we?

Answer: Venice and Rome

I don't think I could have organised a more romantic honeymoon. Aaah.
15. Our most recent holiday was a little closer to home, where we visited a pub called "Greyfriars Bobby". This was named after a small Skye Terrier who stayed by his master's grave for 14 years after his death. Which city did we visit?

Answer: Edinburgh

Edinburgh must be one of the most fascinating cities in the whole world, and is steeped in history. Most of the pubs have some kind of story to their name and there is so much to do and see...especially if you get the right weather for it too!
