Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Kruger National Park is named after which statesman?

Answer: Paul Kruger

Paul Kruger was state president of the South African Republic when he expressed concern about the dwindling numbers of wild animals. Hunting was rife in the 19th century. His concern eventually led to the establishment of the Sabie Game Sanctuary in 1898. When the reserve was re-proclaimed in 1926, its name was changed to honour Kruger.
2. A little dog, the runt of the litter, was made famous in a book on its adventurous life. Two plaques are set up in the Park, one at an entrance gate and another marking the spot of its birth. What was the dog called?

Answer: Jock

Percy Fitzpatrick published the book 'Jock of the Bushveld' in 1905, telling the story of the feisty bullterrier that accompanied him on his travels in the frontier days of the Lowveld.
3. Although the Park has many rest, bush and private camps to choose from, only two places incorporate an entrance gate and rest camp in one. Name the two areas.

Answer: Orpen and Crocodile Bridge

The Crocodile Bridge area lies close to the Mozambique border, while Orpen is about 200 kilometers further north-west. Nine entrance gates provide access to the Park, plus the new thoroughfare Giriyondo to Mozambique.
4. When tourists spot a rhino alongside their car, the white rhino's square mouth might remind them of what type of machine?

Answer: Lawnmower

Both white and black rhinos are grey in colour. White rhinos have a square mouth in order to 'mow' grass while black rhinos have an elongated upper lip to strip leaves off trees. Rhinos do not have good eyesight but their sense of smell is excellent.
5. Many rest camps provide visitors with a swimming pool to cool off in. What camp holds the honour of boasting a rockpool since 1956?

Answer: Pretoriuskop

In 1956 the Rembrandt van Rhyn tobacco company sponsored a pool, cloakrooms and kiosk. Built into a rocky outcrop, the swimming facilities were the first in the Park and are still in use today.
6. When were the mysterious White Lions of Timbavati discovered?

Answer: 1970s

First seen in 1975, the white cubs caused a stir. Local communities attributed spiritual significance to them. They were moved to Pretoria Zoo for their own protection but have since been re-introduced to the wild. Their condition is not albinism but leucism, sporting white pelts but coloured eyes.
7. At one time the railway was used for train safaris. A locomotive and wagons still serve as a restaurant in what camp?

Answer: Skukuza

The line ran from Pretoria to Delagoa Bay (Maputo), with a sideline to Skukuza. The nine day train safaris offered tourists a unique experience. Train safaris have long since ceased but the spectacular train bridge across the Sabie remains. The Selati restaurant serves dinners in authentic wagons next to the original platform.
8. Boabab trees are called upside down trees, sticking puny branches into the African sky, growing from massively thick trunks. The oldest tree in the Kruger area is estimated at what age?

Answer: 1000 years

Although outside the Park boundaries, the biggest boabab is estimated to be over 1000 years old, standing 22 metres high, with the trunk 47 metres in circumference. Boababs dot the northern part of the Park. Kruger Park boasts 336 species of trees and 507 bird species.
9. What rare dinosaur-like animal can tourists hope to get a glimpse of on a night drive?

Answer: Pangolin

Pangolins with their defense of closely packed scales are usually only seen at night. Most of the camps offer game drives in open safari vehicles in the early mornings and after sunset, rewarding tourists with a very personal game experience.
10. The 'Magnificent Seven' is the name given to the greatest tuskers, elephant bulls with massive ivory. One of the best known was Mafunyane. What made him instantly recognizable?

Answer: Hole in head

The hole in his head was a probable attempt by poachers to steal his ivory or may have been caused by another angry elephant. No wonder he was a short-tempered elephant. The seven bulls are now all dead but their tusks and history are preserved in the museum in Letaba camp. The other six were Shingwedzi, Shawu, Dzombo, Ndulamithi, Kambaku and Joao.
