Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was in the first triumvirate?

Answer: Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey

Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey teamed up because of what they brought to the table, not because they liked each other. Caesar was the "face man" of the group. He knew both sides of society; the poor and the rich. He was the guy that everyone wanted to be around. Crassus had money.

He wanted 'gravitas', or social standing (the more 'gravitas', the more respect), but the only thing he had was business success. Pompey had the support of the soldiers in the legions. He was known as Pompey Magnus or Pompey the Great.
2. What was the Pax Romana?

Answer: a time of peace and prosperity for Rome

During the Pax Romana, the Roman Empire had more than 3 million square miles and a population of 60-80 million. Pax Romana means "Roman peace." It lasted from 27 B.C to AD 180.
3. English is a Romance language: that is, it belongs to the group (or family) of languages derived from Latin.

Answer: False

The main languages derived from Latin are Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, and Portuguese. English is a Germanic language. However, much of its vocabulary is derived from Latin, either through French or directly.
4. When Germanic tribes invaded the Roman Empire they had three consequences: trade was disrupted, population shifted, and ...

Answer: major cities declined

Because of the Germanic invasions, the population of the cities went mostly to the countryside. Because of the people leaving, the cities declined, and because there were barely any people in the cities, trade also declined. It was a vicious circle.
5. What ended the civil war between Charlemagne's three grandsons, Charles the Bald, Lothair, and Louis the German?

Answer: Treaty of Verdun

The Treaty of Verdun (843) also split Charlemagne's empire.
6. What was the code of chivalry?

Answer: a code of behavior for knights

The code of chivalry stressed ideals such as courage, loyalty, courtesy, romantic love, magnanimity towards the weak, and devotion. However, the code wasn't always followed.
7. What was the religion of Byzantium?

Answer: Eastern Orthodox

The Eastern Orthodox church eventually spread to Russia.
8. Who was the last to successfully invade England from the water?

Answer: William the Conquerer

William the Conquerer was the last one to invade England on the water. The English knew what they were doing.
9. What was the effect of the Crusades?

Answer: both of these

There had been tension between Christians and Muslims for a long time but it grew after the Crusades.
10. Humanism came from studying the classical texts of the Greeks and Romans.

Answer: True

Humanism was a Renaissance intellectual movement in which thinkers studied classical texts and focused on human potential and achievements.
