Answer: Manufacturing

World War II had created a large demand for cattle, wheat, wood, and metals.
2. This resource was discovered near Virden in 1951 - can you name it?

Answer: Oil

Virden is located on the Trans-Canada Highway halfway between Winnipeg and Regina.
3. I'm not sure how this compares to other regions of Canada, but by 1954, all of Manitoba's rural areas finally had this - what am I talking about?

Answer: Electricity

The first electric lighting in Manitoba was recorded in 1882. It only took 72 years for electricity to be available province-wide!
4. After the flood of 1950, the question of a flood diversion around Winnipeg was raised once again. Premier Dufferin Roblin, after taking over the government of Manitoba in 1954, pushed for its construction. It wasn't completed until 1968, but it would forever be remembered as Premier Roblin's pet project. What is the nickname of the floodway?

Answer: Duff's Ditch

The cost for the construction of the floodway was $63,000,000 and it stretches for 47 kilometres around the eastern edge of Winnipeg. The floodway has saved Winnipeg from floods 18 times since its completion. It is estimated that without the floodway, the 1997 flood would have had 80% of Winnipeg under water, with 500,000 people being evacuated.
5. In 1956, large nickel deposits were discovered in the Moak Lake-Mystery Lake area. Since then, the town that was built to develop that mine has become one of the largest nickel-producing centres in the world. Which town is it?

Answer: Thompson

Thompson is Manitoba's third largest city and has the motto "Hub of the North".
6. In 1963, the first laboratories went into operation at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment, and two years later, a nuclear reactor was up and running. Near which town is it located?

Answer: Pinawa

The nuclear reactor was a 60 MW (thermal) WR-1 research reactor. It was used as a test reactor for the proposed organic-cooled CANDU reactors. The WR-1 reactor was shut down in 1985.
7. The amalgamation of the United, Wesley, and Manitoba Colleges in 1967 formed which university?

Answer: University of Winnipeg

The University of Manitoba was founded in 1877, and Brandon University in 1899. The Red River University is a figment of my imagination.
8. The provincial election of 1969 saw the election of the first socialist government in Manitoba (the New Democratic Party), which was only the second Canadian province to have a socialist government. Which province was the first?

Answer: Saskatchewan

The leader of the NDP (and newest Premier of Manitoba) at the time was Edward Schreyer. While in office, one of his accomplishments was to have the voting age reduced from 21 to 18. As can be expected, he also had a number of labour-related laws passed as well.
9. Although Manitoba had several areas of economic growth in this quarter-century, by 1970 the largest growth was in the service and public sector. Who was the largest employer in Manitoba?

Answer: The Government

It was, and still is the largest employer in Manitoba - isn't it amazing how many people can work for a bureaucracy?
10. This famous hockey player came over from the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks to join the WHA's Winnipeg Jets for the 1972-73 hockey season. Who is he?

Answer: Bobby Hull

Hull played with the Jets until the 1979-80 season, during which he moved on to the Hartford Whalers. The 1979-80 season saw the Jets enter the NHL as an expansion franchise.
