Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first question of this quiz needs some background. 1960 saw the first hydroelectric plant developed on the Nelson River. Further development began in 1966, and by the 70s, the damming of the river was causing many problems for the aboriginals in the area. What legislation came into effect in 1977 to address this problem?

Answer: The Northern Flood Agreement

The Northern Flood Agreement promised the native people compensation for damage to their lands or disruption to their lifestyle due to the effects of the resultant flooding.
2. Another controversy made headlines in Manitoba two years later, in 1979, when a man from Winnipeg's French Quarter (St. Boniface) refused to pay a parking ticket that was worded only in English. His fight became a language issue that eventually saw a ruling made in his favour in 1985 by this court.

Answer: The Supreme Court of Canada

The result of his fight had far-reaching ramifications as the Supreme Court ruled under the Manitoba Act of 1985 that ALL the laws enacted in Manitoba going back to 1890 had to be published in both English and French.
3. The year 1979 also saw the National Hockey League expand by four teams: The Edmonton Oilers, the Québec Nordiques, the Hartford Whalers, and the Winnipeg Jets. From which league did these teams come?

Answer: WHA

The Winnipeg Jets were formed in 1972, joining the WHA and proceeding to have a successful 7 seasons, winning the Avco Cup in 1976, '78, and '79. The most prominent team member during this time was Bobby Hull (The Golden Jet).
4. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney worked hard in 1987, along with the 10 provincial premiers, to establish the Meech Lake Accord, which would recognize Québec as a "distinct society," among other things. It was designed to persuade the Province of Québec to finally endorse the Constitution Act of 1982. The Government of Manitoba, in an effort to bypass public consultation, needed a unanimous vote by the Legislature to carry approval to the federal government. Which Member of the Legislative Assembly voted against Meech Lake in order to protect the interests of Canada's aboriginal population?

Answer: Elijah Harper

Harper's vote essentially killed any hope of a ratification of the Meech Lake Accord. Another failed attempt was made by the federal government to accomplish much the same thing through the Charlottetown Accords of 1992. These failed efforts resulted in a referendum in Québec in 1995 that saw a very narrow defeat of a vote to separate from Canada (50.58% to 49.42%)
5. A Heritage Advisory Committee was formed in 1988 to advise on heritage matters as pertained to the development of the Forks Historic Site. The grand opening of the Forks Market occured on October 4th, 1989. Since then the site has further developed to become Winnipeg's premier tourist location. What was the land used for previously?

Answer: Rail Yards

From 1886 until 1923, the Forks site was the hub of early rail development into the prairies. Five different rail companies used the site for their rail yards. Many of the buildings at the Forks Historic Site were originally stables and bridge buildings at the location. Union Station, at the corner of Main and Broadway and adjacent to the Forks site, is still in operation.
6. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Manitoba's Canadian Football League franchise, won the Grey Cup in 1990. Who did they defeat to claim the title?

Answer: The Edmonton Eskimos

The 78th Grey Cup was held at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, and the final score was Winnipeg 50, Edmonton 11. However, the Bombers did not win the cup again in the following 20 years.
7. In 1995, the Provincial Government did something that hadn't been done in 22 years. What was it?

Answer: Balanced the budget

Gary Filmon's Progressive Conservative government worked very hard to achieve this milestone, so much so that mandatory non-working, non-paid days were taken by all government employees once per month that earned the name "Filmon Fridays."
8. Financial difficulties forced the Winnipeg Jets owners to move the team to Phoenix after the 1996-97 season.

Answer: False

The team's final season in Winnipeg was actually the previous year: 1995-96. Despite a public rallying effort, the funds needed to build the arena that team owners demanded for the team to remain financially viable in Winnipeg could not be raised.
9. Manitoba's Red River Valley is known for its periodic flooding. In 1997, the Red and Assiniboine Rivers flooded their banks yet again, and this time it was bad enough to earn the moniker "The Flood of the Century!" Between Manitoba and North Dakota, what were the total damages of the flood's effects estimated to be?

Answer: US $3.5 billion

Were it not for the Red River Floodway, or Duff's Ditch as it is known in Manitoba, Winnipeg itself would have flooded. In Manitoba, damages were estimated at $500 million, and it was touted as being the worst flood since that of 1826.
10. The fall of 1999 saw Manitoba in the midst of another provincial election. Gary Filmon's successes with balancing budgets notwithstanding, it was a tight political race. Which party won?

Answer: New Democratic Party

Gary Doer and the NDP came into power to usher in the new millennium. The seat breakdown was as follows: NDP - 32, PC - 24, LIB - 1.
