Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Airco DH.2 is an example of a pusher engined aircraft.

Answer: True

A pusher engined aircraft is one in which the engine and propeller are located at the rear of the aircraft. This removed the need for an interrupter gear as well as improving forward visibility. The DH.2 was a single seat scout fighter with a top speed of 93 miles per hour.

The only armament for the DH.2 was a 7.62 mm Lewis machine-gun situated in front of the pilot. In time, the pilots began fixing the Lewis gun in position and using the aircraft to aim the gun.
2. The Breguet model 14 was a bomber of what national origin?

Answer: French

The Breguet model 14 was used in roles other than bomber throughout World War I. They were also used as reconnaissance, artillery support, and as an air ambulance for front line troops. The armament consisted of three to four .303 Lewis machine-guns and a maximum bomb load of 704 pounds. Belgium and the United States also used model 14 Breguet aircraft throughout World War I.
3. Which heavy bomber series was developed by Zeppelin?

Answer: Staaken R

The Staaken R took part in the very first strategic bombing missions in history. The crew members of the Staaken R heavy bombers made some of the first uses of radio for navigation. The Staaken R also dropped the largest bombs of that time, reaching up to 1,000 kg.
Ilya Mouromets designed by Igor Sikorsky for Czarist Russia.
The Gotha G.V was also a German bomber and would accompany Staaken Rs on their strategic bombing missions.
Vickers Vimy was British and arrived too late to take part in the hostilities.
4. What type of aircraft was the Scout designed by Thomas-Morse?

Answer: Trainer

The Scout was initially intended as a fighter, but was switched to a solo advanced trainer. Production ceased with the end of World War I, but those already produced lasted into the following decades.
5. The S.XIII developed by SPAD was disliked by Allied pilots due its poor performance.

Answer: false

The S.XIII was well liked by Allied pilots because it was durable and fast. There were many World War I aces who chose to fly the S.XIII. The Lafayette Escadrille, a squadron of American pilots flying for the French prior to the United States entering World War I, did well with the S.XIII.

SPAD stands for Societe Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérives.
6. Which fighter was NOT developed by Sopwith?

Answer: R.E.8

Royal Aircraft Factory produced the R.E.8. The Snipe only saw the last month of the war, but did extremely well none the less. The Camel, though somewhat challenging to control, did very well in dogfights when flown by experienced pilots. The Pup was one of the Allies' first fighters to be a match for German aircraft.
7. Which aircraft developed by Royal Aircraft Factory had a pusher engine design?

Answer: F.E.2

B.E.2 was a two seat reconnaissance and light bomber. F.E.2 was a two seat fight and fighter-bomber. R.E.8 was a reconnaissance, artillery spotter and light bomber. S.E.5A was a single seat fighter.
8. What effect did Gotha bombers G.IVs and G.Vs have on the Western Front?

Answer: pulled part of Britains air force away from the front to help defend the home front

Gotha bombers took part in strategic bombing raids on Britain. The bombing raids had little to no effect on British infrastructure, but what it did accomplish was pull British air squadrons away from the action on the Western Front.
9. How many wings did the Fokker Dr.1 have?

Answer: three

The Fokker Dr.1 was a triplane, or had three wings. The Dr.1 was a very successful German design. A one-winged plane is a monoplane. A two-winged plane is a biplane. I don't believe any four-winged planes were developed, but if they were I'd say they would be called 'quadplanes'.
10. The W.12 and W.29, developed by Hansa-Brandenburg, was what type of combat aircraft?

Answer: fighter scout seaplane

The W.12 and W.29 were introduced in the latter half of the Great War. They were designed by Ernst Heinkel. They were two seat planes, with the pilot in the front and a gunner observer in the rear. The W.12, introduced in 1917, was a biplane while the W.29, introduced the year after, was a monoplane.
