In 1957 Ralph Abernathy and King were instrumental in founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. King was always concious of the possiblity of death. He said nonviolence can touch men where the law cannot. King was assassinated April 4, 1968.

Answer: Alex Haley

In 1965 Haley resolved to trace the genealogy of his mother's family. He grew up listening to his grandmother's stories about 'Kin-Tay', an African-American ancestor who was enslaved and shipped to America. 'Roots', Haley's account of his family, was published in 1976, 12 years after his research began.
