Fuchida was the lead commander of the Japanese air forces that attacked Pearl Harbor. Admiral Nagumo was very disappointed when he was not able to participate as the lead air commander in the Battle of Midway.

Lt. Tomonaga was a veteran pilot aboard the Japanese carrier, Hiryu. He was killed during the Battle of Midway while leading an attack against the American carrier, Yorktown.

The Americans then intercepted a Japanese message that said AF was having problems with their water condenser. The Americans then knew AF was in fact Midway.

Answer: Ray Spruance

Admiral Halsey was in the hospital with a case of shingles. Admiral Nimitz asked Halsey to recommend a replacement for him at Midway. He recommended Spruance, even though Spruance was a cruiser commander. Halsey felt he had a good understanding of carrier tactics.
10. Which Japanese aircraft carrier was the last to be sunk at Midway?

Answer: Hiryu

The Hiryu was the last of the 4 Japanese carriers to be sunk at Midway. Tomeo Kaku, the captain of the Hiryu, stayed aboard the ship as it was sinking with his commanding officer, Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi, who also went down with the ship.
