Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Billy the Kid was born in what city?

Answer: New York City, NY

It is generally believed that New York is the birthplace because Pat Garrett and Ash Upson stated it was in the book, "The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid." However, Frederick Nolan, the foremost expert on the Kid, refutes the claim. New York could be the birthplace of Billy, but there is no records to prove it was.
2. Catherine Antrim, Billy's mother, died of what cause?

Answer: Tuberculosis

In order to heal from tuberculosis, you need warm air and a lot of rest. Unfortunately, Billy's stepfather was a drunk who couldn't hold a job, so Catherine had to take several jobs to support the family, and essentially, Billy the Kid's mother worked herself to death.
3. Billy ran away from his employer, John Tunstall.

Answer: False

Billy was actually a member of a rival gang of Tunstall's; Tunstall persuaded him to switch sides.
4. Billy retrieved these two objects from Sheriff Brady.

Answer: rifle and arrest warrants

Sheriff Brady was Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, and he was paid off by Tunstall's rival to look the other way while the gangs committed crimes.
5. He was the true leader of the Regulators, the band of outlaws Billy the Kid was associated with.

Answer: Dick Brewer

Contrary to Hollywood belief, Dick Brewer was the undisputed leader of the Regulators gang. Had he lived, the Lincoln County War probably would have had a different outcome.
6. This Hollywood star played the role of Billy the Kid in the "Young Guns" movies.

Answer: Emilio Estevez

Only one photo of Billy the Kid has ever existed, and Emilio Estevez doesn't even remotely resemble this tintype picture.
7. This member of Billy the Kid's gang was murdered at Stinking Springs.

Answer: Charlie Bowdre

In the movie "Young Guns 2", Doc Scurlock was the man killed at Stinking Springs. This is not historically accurate.
8. This famous sheriff was traditionally credited with killing Billy the Kid.

Answer: Pat Garrett

Well, all accounts, including the one that Garrett himself wrote, give credit to Pat for killing Billy the Kid, but new forensic evidence is unravelling more of the mystery of this "murder" every day....
9. What is the name of the man who claimed to be Billy the Kid in 1950?

Answer: Brushy Bill Roberts

Bill Roberts' grave actually has him listed as "Billy the Kid", and some forensic scientists have completed photo analyses on Brushy Bill and Billy the Kid that suggest that they are the same person.
10. Where is Billy the Kid's supposed gravesite?

Answer: Ft. Sumner, New Mexico

The tombstone at this site is not the original. A flood in the early 20th century washed the first tombstone away, and no one is sure if this is the correct gravesite.
