Answer: Wild Bill Hickok

Wild Bill Hickok (James Butler Hickok) was born in Illinois in 1837, and moved to the Kansas Territory in 1855. He had a colorful career, including such various occupations as stagecoach driver, army scout, lawman, gambler, marksman and actor. Following his stint as marshal of Abilene, Kansas, he joined Buffalo Bill's play called "Scouts of the Plains".

Afterwards, suffering from deteriorating eyesight, he made his way by gambling and staging marksmanship displays. He died, at the age of 39 in Deadwood.

While playing poker - with his back not to the wall as was his usual custom - he was shot dead by Jack McCall. The hand Hickok was holding - two pairs, black aces and eights - is known as the dead-man's hand.

Answer: Bat Masterson

Born in Canada - baptised as Bartholomew - Bat Masterson lived in Quebec, New York and Illinois before moving to Kansas. During his younger years, he spent some time in Texas fighting Native Americans. Between his stints throughout the West as a lawman, he made his living as a gambler.

In 1902, he left the 'Wild West' and moved to New York City, where he became a newspaper writer and editor. He died in 1921, of a heart attack - rather than a bullet.

Answer: Doc Holliday

John Henry "Doc" Holliday was perhaps best known for his participation in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but he had quite a history before that event. Born in Georgia, Doc Holliday suffered from tuberculosis. His mother died of the same disease when he was 15, and quite possibly passed it on to him - although he may have contracted the disease through his dental practice. During his relatively short life, he was a legendary gambler, a feared marksman and a close friend of Wyatt Earp.

He died in Colorado, at the age of 36, from the cumulative effects of his lifestyle and his tuberculosis.

Answer: Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux, who came to be esteemed by other Native Americans as a holy man. He was adamant in his opposition to the "white man's" encroachment and desired possession of Indian territory. He had a vision of triumph over the Indian Nation's enemies - the Battle of Little Big Horn - which indeed came true, but the aftermath left much to be desired by him and his people.

After escaping to Canada to elude military repercussions, Sitting Bull and his band eventually returned.

After their return, Sitting Bull participated for four months in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He died in 1890 (at 58 or 59 years of age) during a confrontation with the police, who were trying to remove him from the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

Answer: Wyatt Earp

Wyatt Earp was born in Illinois in 1848, and died at the age of 80 in California. He is best remembered, probably, for his part in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but he had a very colorful and eventful life. In addition to his positions in law enforcement, he also spent time as a teamster, buffalo hunter, brothel owner, mining investor, saloon owner and gambler. And, in his later years in Los Angeles, he was an unpaid film consultant, rubbing shoulders with the famous - such as Tom Mix - and the future famous - including John Wayne.

Answer: John Wesley Hardin

The son of a Methodist preacher, Hardin was named after the man who founded Methodism. Born in 1853 in Texas, he boasted that by the time he was imprisoned in 1878 he had killed 42 men, although records seem to indicate that the number was quite a bit lower - 27.

He was sentenced to 25 years in Huntsville Prison for the murder of Deputy Charles Webb, but was released after serving 17 years. While he was in prison he studied, and upon his release and subsequent pardon, he took and passed the Texas bar examination and became a licensed lawyer.

In 1895, during a confrontation in a saloon, he was shot to death by John Selman, Sr. (who in turn was shot to death in 1896).

Answer: Jesse James

Jesse James was either a folk hero or an outlaw, depending on which historical slant one chooses to believe. Regardless, his exploits included robbery, intimidation and murder. Born in 1847, Jesse was killed by a member of his gang (Robert Ford) in 1882. Jesse James went on to be immortalized in books, songs, film, and in museums, festivals and legends as a 'Robin Hood' figure.

Answer: Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill was born William Frederick Cody in 1846, and earned the right to use "Buffalo Bill" as his nickname by outdoing Bill Comstock in a bison shooting contest. One of the best known figures of America's Wild West, Buffalo Bill won a Medal of Honor in 1872 for his service to the Army, a medal which was taken away from him in 1917 after the standards for issuance were raised.

A reassessment in 1989 returned his medal. He died of kidney failure at the age of 70, but he has been remembered in numerous ways, including being featured on postage stamps and having a football team named after him (New York's Buffalo Bills).
9. Dear Revered Parents, Last night at the Long Branch Saloon, we had a very unusual patron. A woman who was not one of the lesser classes, nor a temperance advocate. Can you guess by what nickname this amazing lady is known? With all due affection, Cindy

Answer: Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley learned to shoot at a very young age, at least in part to put food on her family's table. Born in 1860, she met her future husband, Frank Butler - and bested him in a shooting match - at the age of 15. Married the next year, they joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1885.

After leaving the show, beginning in 1902 Annie performed in a play custom-tailored for her - "The Western Girl" - and continued to break records and raise the threshold in the marksmanship arena well into her 60s.

Heartbroken, her husband died just 18 days later.

Answer: John Brown

John Brown first came to wide public attention during the period known as "Bleeding Kansas". He was vociferous in his opposition to slavery and Southern aggression in Kansas, and was willing to defend and promote his beliefs in whatever method was necessary - including violence.

His raid on Harper's Ferry, in July of 1859, began well enough, but ended in defeat - and disaster - for Brown and his followers. John Brown was hanged in December of 1859, and among the witnesses to his death were Stonewall Jackson, John Wilkes Booth and Walt Whitman.
