Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which European country was, from 1534 till about 1760, the main Canadian "mother country"?

Answer: France

French rule started in 1534 when Jacques Cartier, an explorer who worked for the French King, François I. At the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, Canada became an entirely British territory.
2. In the sixteenth century, what Canadian resource was very precious for European merchants?

Answer: Fur

First, I have to mention that the sixteenth century was from 1501 to 1600 (in case some got confused). Nevertheless, fur was the main resource of Canadian commerce during the French regime (from 1534 to c. 1760).
3. In 1763, with the Royal Proclamation, which country officially became Canada's new "mother country"?

Answer: Britain

In 1760, England defeated France in their colonial war. In 1763 a British Royal Proclamation declared "New France" to be Canada and English law was introduced.
4. What was the name of the only Canadian province from 1673 to 1791?

Answer: Quebec

The first Canadian province to be created was Quebec. Most of the people in the province spoke French. Most of the English people in province of Quebec were traders.
5. Why was Canada split in two in 1791?

Answer: Loyalists from the US wanted an English territory

After the American War of Independence, some Americans still were loyal to Britain. They went to live in Canada and asked for a totally English province, because Quebec was mostly French. In 1791 Britain split Canada into two parts, one of which - very roughly the future Ontario - was mainly English-speaking.
6. What were the names of the two regions created by the division in 1791?

Answer: Upper Canada and Lower Canada

Upper Canada became Canada West later, then the province of Ontario. Lower Canada became Canada East, then the province of Quebec, just as it had been from 1760 to 1791.
7. How were the two Canadians provinces named in 1840?

Answer: Western Canada and Eastern Canada

After 1867, Western and Eastern Canada were renamed Ontario and Quebec.
8. In 1867, which two provinces (other than Quebec and Ontario) were in the Canadian confederation?

Answer: Nova Scotia and New Brunswick

Manitoba joined in 1870. After this, British Columbia in 1871 and Prince Edward Island in 1873 joined. In 1905, Alberta and Saskatchewan were created. The last province to join was Newfoundland in 1949.
9. When did Canada become totally independent of Britain?

Answer: 1931

Thanks to this law, The Statue of Westminster 1931, Canada was granted legal autonomy and was thus able to declare war to Germany in 1939 (whereas in 1914 Britain had declared war on behalf of the entire Empire). Canada was one of the countries to participate to the D-Day in World War II.

In 1982, the power to amend the Canadian Constitution was moved, at the request of Canada, from the UK to Canada as follows: the Dominion of Canada was constituted by the British North American Act 1867 (an act of the UK parliament). It was renamed the Constitution Act 1867 from 1982 onwards, upon the enactment of the Constitution Act 1982 by the Canadian parliament a d the Canada Act 1982 by the UK parliament.
10. What were the four Canadian parties that won more than one seat in the 2004 federal vote?
