Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Union General's forces attacked the Confederate position known as the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864?

Answer: Winfield Scott Hancock

Hancock's forces lead a successful assault to take the position, but could not completely dislodge Lee's forces from the battlefield. General Edward "Allegheny" Johnson was captured along with many of his men.
2. For how long did the fighting at the Bloody Angle take place?

Answer: 20 hours

A staggering 20 hours straight! Some of the longest sustained fighting of the war. The main Confederate position was taken, but they retreated to another defensible position.
3. Which battlefield location was known as the "Battle Above the Clouds"?

Answer: Lookout Mountain

Union General Joseph Hooker's forces successfully took this position at the Battle of Chattanooga in November 1863. He redeemed himself for the debacle at Chancellorsville.
4. What Union officer commanded the brigade containing Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's 20th Maine regiment at Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg?

Answer: Strong Vincent

Vincent's action in sending troops to defend the hill may very well have saved the Union Army. The Northern forces arrived just minutes before the Confederates and repulsed them in severe fighting.
5. Which famous site at Gettysburg was on the property of the Rose Farm at the time?

Answer: The Wheatfield

The battle in this sector was a stalemate during the second day before the Union Army secured it on July 3rd. The fighting here was especially nasty as several thousand men were casualties in the span of a few hours.
6. What Union commander's division first assaulted the Sunken Road at Antietam?

Answer: French

Brigadier General French's division started the assault on the position. They suffered severe losses at first, but were reinforced and managed to get into better positions to exchange fire with the entrenched Confederates.
7. Whose division arrived to reinforce French at the Sunken Road?

Answer: Richardson

The addition of Major General Richardson's Division allowed the Union forces to break through the Confederate center at the Sunken Road. At this point, the Confederate center was broken, but the mortal wounding of Richardson, Longstreet's directing artillery fire from a single battery, a small counter-attack by D.H. Hill, and the caution of McClellan caused the attack to peter out.
8. At what key battle in 1865 did General Sherman finally decisively defeat General Johnston, eventually forcing his surrender?

Answer: Bentonville

Sherman's victory at this location in North Carolina in March 1865 marked the end of major fighting south of Virginia. Johnston would surrender about a month later to conclude the fighting in the Carolinas.
9. At which Virginia battle in April 1865 was Confederate General Richard Ewell captured?

Answer: Sayler's Creek

This blow crippled Lee even further. Several thousand Confederates were captured as Lee's road to Appomattox took a disastrous turn at this battlefield. The surrender would occur only days later.
10. At which battle was Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raid into Indiana and Ohio dealt a severe blow before his capture by Union forces?

Answer: Buffington Island

This battle extinguished any threat of Morgan raiding further with any great strength into Ohio. He was later captured at Salineville and imprisoned for a time. He later escaped, but was eventually killed by Union authorities.
